Winnipeg Goldeyes Named 2009 Northern League Organization of the Year
September 10, 2009 - Northern League (NL) News Release
For the second consecutive season, the Winnipeg Goldeyes were named the Northern League Organization of the Year as voted on by select league personnel and players.
The longest tenured team in the Northern League, the Goldeyes took home the organization of the year honors for the fourth time in the award's seven-year history. On the field, the Goldeyes qualified for the post-season for the 14th time in 16 years. At the gates, the Goldeyes welcomed a league-high 278,099 fans to Canwest Park in 2009. In addition, they led all independent baseball in average attendance at 6,180 fans per game. Winnipeg surpassed the 6,000-plus fans a game mark for the 11th
consecutive season.
Sam Katz, the team President and CEO (pictured left), has seen his franchise continue to excel on the field, in the stands, and in the Winnipeg community. Led by Andrew Collier, who has been the General Manager in Winnipeg since the 2002 season, the Goldeyes have raised over $1.1 million for children's charities in Manitoba through its Goldeyes Field of Dreams Foundation, which was founded in 1995.
Prior to the start of the 2009 season, the Goldeyes donated more than $120,000 to 40 registered charities in the province, including the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation, the Children's Wish Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. A further $30,000 was provided to teams that sold 50/50 tickets at home games in 2008, taking the total annual amount donated to just over $150,000.
In addition to supporting children's charities, the Field of Dreams Foundation has also set aside funds for three $1,000 scholarships for the Manitoba Baseball Association.
