Wings Travel to Milwaukee for Final Match

Wichita, KS. - The Wichita Wings (7-18) of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) will travel to Milwaukee on Sunday, March 3rd to face off with the Milwaukee Wave (18-5) in the final match of the regular season for both clubs; Kick-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CST) in the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Wichita enters Sunday afternoon's game after enduring another close loss on the road in Missouri last week. The Wings raced to an early 6-0 first quarter lead with Daniel Villegas and Tiguinho setting up two Freddy Moojen goals and Villegas finishing a goal of his own. The second quarter belonged to the Comets with Jeff Hughes converting a two-point goal and Brian Harris connecting on two three-point goals to hand the Comets an 8-6 lead at the midway point. Determined to change the course of the game, Wichita made an adjustment in goal, replacing Sanaldo with Nic Martinez. The goalkeeper switch proved effective as the Wings were able shut out the Comets in the third quarter. With Martinez solidifying the Wings defense, Andrew Hoxie led the attack in the period, finishing a ball sent in by Kareem Yearwood to level the score at 8 apiece. Victor Quiroz continued the momentum for Wichita with a significant three-point goal just 30 seconds into the final quarter to steal the lead, leaving the Wings ahead, 11-8. Hughes halted Wichita's run by connecting on his second goal of the night to trim Missouri's deficit to one point. With the Wings pushing forward trying to score to put the game out of reach, Missouri caught Wichita on a counterattack with Mads Falck finishing off a pinpoint assist by Byron Alvarez. Falck would complete the victory for the Comets, scoring a three-point goal with the sixth attacker on for the Wings, handing Missouri a 15-11 win over Wichita.
Milwaukee hosts Syracuse tomorrow night after squaring off with the Silver Knights on Wednesday night in Syracuse in a match that the Wave controlled the entire way. Milwaukee started the game off with three unanswered goals led by Nicolas Perera who recorded a goal and an assist, giving the Wave an early 6-0 lead. Kenardo Forbes brought the Silver Knights a goal back, scoring with under five minutes left in the opening quarter to cut Milwaukee's lead to 6-2. Less than a minute later, however, the Wave would push their lead back to six with Luan Oliveira converting to give Milwaukee an 8-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more of a defensive battle, but three minutes into the quarter, Perera would finish his second goal of the night and the only goal in the quarter to give the Wave a 10-2 lead. Syracuse entered the second half determined to complete a comeback. Led by a goal and two assists by Slavisa Ubiparapovic and a goal and an assist by Neto, the Silver Knights outscored the Wave 6-2 in the second half, but it would not be enough as Milwaukee held on for a 12-8 victory over Syracuse.
Wichita seeks its first victory over Milwaukee this season as the Wave has won each of the three previous matches between the clubs. In their most recent match on January 25, the Wings found themselves down 10-2 entering the fourth quarter. A late rally ignited by Chris Lemons saw Wichita pull the two clubs even at 10 apiece. With the momentum completely in favor of the Wings, Hewerton converted off a quick restart for the Wave to pull Milwaukee back ahead 12-10. The Wings were unable to finish any of their great chances late in the game sealing the victory for the Wave.
Key match-ups - Wings Attack vs. Wave Defense
In each of their previous three matches, Wichita held Milwaukee to 12 points, but in all three games it would not be enough as the Wings managed to score only 4, 6, and 10 points. The defense continues to remain reliable for the Wings and they repeatedly find themselves in close games. The offense got on track early in Wichita's match against Missouri providing the Wings an early 6-0 lead. Expanding that offensive production will be the key as Wichita looks to finish their final game of the season with a win.
Player to Watch: Andrew Hoxie
Andrew Hoxie, the giant Wings target forward scored a critical equalizer against the Comets that gave Wichita a brief momentum push. Hoxie began the season on fire, ranking him among the leaders in the MISL in scoring. As his defensive work rate has improved as the season has gone on, Hoxie looks like he's on the verge of a scoring surge as well. Look for the so called, "ËBig Smooth' to lead the attack for Wichita on Sunday.
