Norfolk SharX News Release

Norfolk, Virginia - When the Norfolk SharX and the Wichita Wings took the field Sunday in the final game of the season for both squads, neither had anything to lose. But the teams had a lot to play for and you could tell from the first kick.

The SharX opened the scoring six minutes in on a blistering 3-point goal from Miguel Ferrer with an assist from Matt Clare. Ferrer simply received and ball outside the top of the arc and let a low shot go that screamed by Wings' keeper Nic Martinez into the lower right corner of the net. The rest of the quarter was a defensive battle and the period ended 3-0 with shots even at 1-1.

Matthew Delicate took over the second quarter scoring two goals and an assist for the SharX, his first just 36 seconds into the period. With the ball in front of the Wings goal, Gary Brooks attempted a bicycle kick that ricocheted off the wall to Gerson Dos Santos. Dos Santos flicked the ball backwards and almost beat Martinez but his shot bounced off the cross bar and the rebound fell to Delicate who made it 5-0.

Wichita's Bryan Perez scored two minutes later to close the gap but Delicate struck again with an assist from goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman. Lieberman brought the ball up and sent it off the wall next the Wings' goal and Delicate tapped in the deflection to make it 7-2.

Gerson Dos Santos added two more for Norfolk when Delicate collected a deflection and put it at Dos Santos' feet and he neatly tucked it into the net to take the SharX up 9-2 with 30 seconds left in the half. The half ended with the SharX outshooting the Wings 8-4 and up by seven points.

The Wings came out in the second half with a purpose and opened the scoring on a goal by Jamar Beasley to make it 9-4. Dos Santos was leveled by a Wing's player and was still down on the pitch when Beasley scored. The officials inexplicably did not stop play so the SharX were playing four on five as play was allowed to continue. Dos Santos was taken to the locker room for treatment.

Delicate answered Beasley's goal with his third of the game to take the SharX up seven at 11-4 but Kevin Ten Eyck then brought the Wings to within four with a 3-point strike with seconds left in the period and the score stood at 11-7. The SharX will still up 13-9 in shots for the game.

The Wings took over in the fourth quarter scoring twice. The SharX played outstanding on defense but the offense stalled. Ten Eyck scored his second of the match to make it 11-9 and Brian Cushing tied it up with less than three minutes remaining to take the match into golden goal overtime - the first overtime match for the SharX this season. And just 28 seconds into extra time, Ten Eyck scored his third of the match from the left corner to secure the win for Wichita.
