Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
WILMINGTON, NC - Coming off a scoreless home opener, Andriy Budnyy and the entire Hammerheads offense came out firing in their second home match Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Wilmington outshot their opponent 18-6, with 12 of those shots being in the first 45 minutes of action. Andriy Budnyy's lone goal in the 44th minute of action was all it took to lead his team to a well-fought victory.
It was an exciting match for an overwhelming crowd of 4457 at Legion stadium. Despite controlling the tempo and putting up an impressive 12 shots in the first half, the Hammerheads didn't look like they were going to find the back of the net. Then came Budnyy. Closing in on the 45 minute mark, a loose ball fell at the feet of the forward 30 yards outside the goal and from that moment on, he never looked back, capitalizing on his first goal of the 2012 season.
Racing past his defender, Budnyy challenged the goalkeeper one-on-one, firing the ball off the post and into the left corner of the goal to give the Hammerheads the edge going into the half. Despite numerous attempts from the entire Hammerhead's offense, Budnyy's goal was all it took to give the Hammerheads the W.
However, Pittsburgh refused to go down without a fight. Riverhounds' goalkeeper, Richard Gilstrap, put on an impressive performance to keep his team in the game.
Tension surmounted during the second half as Pittsburgh fought trying to match Wilmington's lead. Attitudes flared and yellow and red cards were issued, but both teams were goalless the remaining 45 minutes of action, giving the Hammerheads their first home win of the season.
The Wilmington Hammerheads go right back to work on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. They will face off against the Antigua Barracudas for their third straight home game at Legion Stadium. For more information, visit www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com.
