Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads travel to Portland, OR this week to take on Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers in the third round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Hammerheads are set to play the Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field at 10:30 p.m. EST (7:30 p.m. PDT) on Wednesday, May 29.
Wilmington advanced to the third round after defeating the Austin Aztex of the Premier Development League (PDL) 2-0 last week at House Park in Austin, TX.
The Hammerheads are transitioning into U.S. Open Cup mode following an unfortunate weekend in Florida amidst their USL PRO regular season standings. The team took two defeats on the road after playing Orlando City on Saturday at the Florida Citrus Bowl and VSI Tampa Bay FC on Sunday at Plant City Stadium. Wilmington fell 4-1 versus Orlando with a lone goal from midfielder Paul Nicholson, his third of the season thus far. Wilmington again fell the next day to Tampa Bay 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the match, giving Tampa Bay their fifth win of the season.
