Wilmington were able to squeeze by the Charlotte eagles 2-1 on Sunday night. Hertzog scored first for Wilmington in the 29th minute. The Eagles were able to equalize in the 57th minute after Darren Toby found the back of the neck. Steven Perry sealed the deal in the 76th minute pushing Wilmington into the playoffs.
The Eagles will wait to see how the Harrisburg City Islanders fare in tonight's match up against the LA Blues.
With everything at stake for both sides, the game began with a very aggressive mood. After the first 15 minutes of play most of the confrontation took place in the midfield.
Wilmington applied pressure first with two throw in opportunities deep into Eagles territory. In minute 17, Wilmington took their first real shot on goal just missing wide of the post.
The Eagles had their first chance of the match in the 20th minute with a free kick 10 yards outside the box. Mauricio Salles ripped the ball just over the crossbar.
The hammerheads struck first in the 29th minute. Cory Hertzog was able to penetrate deep into the Eagles box and find space enough for the shot after a reckless rebound.
The aggressive play continued with Salles receiving a yellow card in the 36th minute.
Hertzog continued pressure for the Hammerheads as he took Reed on deep in the first half. Reed was able to read the play perfectly and deflect the shot keeping the Eagles within one.
First half finish with Wilmington up 1-0 over the Charlotte Eagles.
The aggressive nature of the game picked up with the start of the second half. Nathan Thornton was the Eagles first sub. He made his presence felt immediately with two beautiful crosses in to Wilmington's box. Darryl Roberts got a head on the second attempt just missing the goal.
The Eagles found their first goal in the 57th minute off a free kick from Salles. After a brief game of pinball in the box Toby's shot found the back of the net.
The Hammerheads answered in the 76th minute. Perry found himself in a breakaway on a counterattack. The Eagles last back lost his footing and Perry was able to get his shot off past Reed, putting the Hammerheads up 2-1.
Despite their best efforts the Eagles were not able to find the equalizer.
The Wilmington Hammerheads defeated the Eagles 2-1.
