Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads are looking to secure the final slot that will qualify them for the 2013 USL PRO playoffs, beginning with their match versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, whom are already playoff bound, on Wednesday, August 14, at Legion Stadium.
Pittsburgh claimed their berth in the playoffs following their 3-2 victory over VSI Tampa Bay FC on Sunday at Highmark Stadium. The Hammerheads last encountered the Riverhounds on the road in July, falling short in a 2-1 defeat.
Wilmington swept the Dayton Dutch Lions both home and away within the same week, but are still finding themselves in competition with them as playoffs near closer. Wilmington, Dayton, and Tampa Bay all have the opportunity through different scenarios to become the final seed.
For the playoffs to be in favor for the Hammerheads, they must defeat the Riverhounds on Wednesday and Antigua Barracuda FC on Saturday, August 17, to provide them a total of 36 points in the league standings overall for the regular season. Upon the possibility of winning both matches, Wilmington must also anticipate for the Harrisburg City Islanders to take victory over Dayton on Saturday.
"Unfortunately, our home record has not been as good this season as in the past and it has cost us," said Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. "Our home form is always on point and our record this season undoubtedly does not reflect our level of play. However, once we make playoffs it could be a total different season - look at last year and our championship run. The only unfortunate thing about it is we would not receive a home game advantage if given the opportunity."
Wednesday is Fan Appreciation Night at Legion Stadium and all general admission tickets are $8.00 when purchased online at www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com or at the front gate of the stadium prior to the start of the match.
