Wilmington Hosts In-state Rival Charlotte

Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release

Wilmington, NC - Following their victory versus the New York Red Bulls Reserves last weekend on their home pitch, the Wilmington Hammerheads will now host their in-state rival, the Charlotte Eagles, at Legion Stadium on Saturday, June 22 for their first meeting of the season.

Charlotte will host VSI Tampa Bay FC on Friday prior to traveling to Wilmington for Saturday's matchup versus the Hammerheads.

Both the Hammerheads and Eagles have yet to win a road match this season and share the same record of four wins when having home field advantage. The Eagles currently lead the Hammerheads four points in the USL PRO league standings with a current record of 4-2-5 compared to the Hammerheads' present record of 4-8-1.

Wilmington was not the only team to take victory over their assigned Major League Soccer Reserves team during the regular season schedule last weekend. Charlotte defeated the Chicago Fire Reserves with two second-half goals by Christian Ramirez and Ben Newnam to earn a comeback victory after Chicago led 1-0 going into halftime.

The Eagles were the only team during the 2012 USL PRO regular season to defeat the Hammerheads at Legion Stadium, interrupting what would have concluded their undefeated home record.

"We have not crossed paths with Charlotte since our final home game last year," said Head Coach David Irving. "They are off to a good start this season, but we have really found our rhythm and are always looking for a win, especially at home."

Wilmington only has one road match separating them from their return game versus Charlotte in July. The Hammerheads travel to Red Bull Arena on Sunday, June 30 to play the New York Red Bulls Reserves once more this season before traveling to the Eagles on Saturday, July 13 to play at Queens University.
