Rockford Thunder News Release

HOUSTON, TEXAS--After handing Team USA its first international loss in three years, the Canadian National Team came to Big League Dreams Sports Park hoping for the same result over Texas Thunder. Hopes simply were not enough for Canada as Texas Thunder took the lead 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, and held on to take game one of this four game regular season series.

In front of a near capacity crowd, Texas Thunder starter Christa Williams, the league leader in strikeouts and wins, took the mound against young Canadian hurler Danielle Lawrie. Lawrie was responsible for handing Team USA its first loss in three years at last week's World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City. Both pitchers battled equally tough for four complete innings, but it was Lawrie who surrendered four hits and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to give Texas Thunder the lead.

Shortstop Adrian Gregory singled to centerfield to start the rally, and then moved to second on left fielder Kim Nesloney's drag bunt hit. With two runners aboard, first baseman Amanda Freed (2-3) ripped a line drive to left field to plate Gregory and score the first Texas Thunder run. Centerfielder Kristen Zaleski then followed with two RBI's as she lofted a deep fly ball to the fence in center field to plate both Nesloney and Freed. Thunder closed out the fifth with a three run lead and would hold on to outlast Canada for a final score of 3-0.

With the win, Thunder moves to 20-8 on the season while Williams improves her record to 11-3 on the season. Lawrie takes her first loss of the series as she surrendered just five hits on seven complete innings.

Thunder will take on Team Canada for game two of this four game series, Friday, July 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Big League Dreams Sports Park in League City.
