
Wildcats Sweep Alaska

The Wichita Falls Wildcats took on the Alaska Avalanche this past weekend, and it was the first time the Cats have played them on home ice. The Wildcats definitely took advantage of being in front of their home crowd as they hit the ice and swept the Avalanche in the weekend series. The Cats picked up four points over the weekend and improved their record to 24-11-1. The Wildcats currently sit in first place in the NAHL South Division with forty-nine points. Wildcats Captain, Adam Cardwell, leads both the team and league in scoring with fifty-eight points.
Friday night the Cats came out strong putting their first goal in less than two minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. McNeil and Morrell assisted Ondrejec who put the puck in the back of the net to get the Wildcats on the board. Before the frame ended Alaska capitalized on a powerplay goal and tied the game. The Avalanche came out dominating in the first few minutes of the second stanza netting two goals in under three minutes and putting the Cats down by two. The Cats would not be let down though as they not only overcame the two goal deficit, they were able to regain the lead. At the 11:28 mark of the second period, Grant Everett blasted the puck into the back of the net off the assist from Salazar and Kaneshiro. Everett's goal put the Cats back within one. Five minutes later, Cardwell put one between the pipes to tie the game. The assists came from Shaun Jameson and Sturdevant. It was just the momentum the Cats needed as they hit the ice in the third period and scored three goals. Skylur Jameson scored only 1:47 into the period off the assist from Morrell and McKenzie. A minute and a half later Luke Salazar blasted one past the Avalanche goalie to give the Cats a 5-3 lead, and they weren't done yet. At the 15:53 mark, Javorek and McNeil found Skylur Jameson who took advantage of his position and slid another one into the back of the net scoring his second goal of the game. That goal sealed the win for the Wildcats as they skated away with the 6-3 victory.
Saturday night it was all Wildcats the whole game as they hit the ice and defeated the Alaska Avalanche 7-4. Luke Salazar got the scoring started early on when he netted his first goal only fifty-one seconds into the game. The assists came from Everett and Cardwell. At the 6:07 mark, Salazar would score another goal on the powerplay. Cardwell and Sponseller got the puck to Salazar who took advantage of the powerplay situation and blasted the puck past the Avalanche goalie to give the Cats an early 2-0 lead. Alaska did score a powerplay goal of their own but the Cats quickly answered back. Grant Everett took advantage of his position on another powerplay when Cardwell and Salazar found him at the 7:48 mark. Everett put the puck between the pipes and the Wildcats led 3-1 going into the first intermission. The Wildcats came out in the second stanza and put two goals in the back of the net in under ten minutes. McKenzie scored the fourth for the Cats at the 5:55 mark of the second stanza off the assist from Cardwell and Duddy. Less than four minutes later, Dustin Nowick netted another one and the Wildcats led 5-2 after forty minutes of play. Alaska scored two goals in the final period, one being a powerplay goal, but it was too little too late. Jeff McNeil scored the Wildcats sixth goal of the game off the assist from Ondrejec and Skylur Jameson at the 10:28 mark. Less than twenty seconds later Nick Shkreli blasted the puck past the Avalanche goalie to seal the win for the Cats. The Wildcats ended up winning 7-4.
The Wildcats next home game is tomorrow, Tuesday, January 15. It is $2 Tuesday. We will be offering $2 End Zone tickets, $2 Hot Dogs, and $2 Small Beers. The Wildcats will be taking on the Kenai River Brown Bears. Puck drops at 7:05pm!
