Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
After sweeping the New Mexico Mustangs last weekend, the Wildcats picked up a 4-2 victory over the Texas Tornado on Saturday night at the Kay Yeager Coliseum. Three players registered two-point nights for the Wildcats, while goalie Tyler Green stopped 35 of 37 shots.
Green continues on a hot streak that started last weekend with a 5-0 shutout of New Mexico on Friday, January 28. Over three games, he is 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average, and a .967 save percentage.
Wade Bennett got the scoring started on Saturday night. Stepping in from his normal spot as a defenseman, Bennett centered the top line and scored in the second period on a 2-on-1 feed from Ryan Frost for a 1-0 lead. Mikhail Sentyurin, replacing the injured Mac Olson on the top line picked up the second assist. Late in the period on the power play, Sentyurin would add a goal of his own, assisted on a cross-crease feed from Jason McAloon and Joe Adams, making a 2-0 game. Sentyurin leads the team with 8 power play goals.
Texas would storm back as Jackson Leef and Jack Prince each scored to tie things at 2-2, but the second line of the 'Cats came through when needed, as Drew Allen scored what would prove to be the game-winner off assists from Dakota Klecha and Chris Leone. Klecha would cap things off with an empty-net goal late, his team-leading 22nd goal of the year. Allen and Tanner Fahlstedt picked up the helpers.
WEEKEND NOTES: Dakota Klecha now has goals in five straight games, the longest such streak on the team this season. After a span of eight scoreless games, Tanner Fahlstedt has picked up four assists in his last five games. The Wildcats picked up forward Russell Blaser in a trade from Port Huron last week. The Wildcats have won their last four at home.
Preview: 2/9 and 11 vs. Amarillo Bulls
The Wildcats look to extend their three-game winning streak this weekend as the Amarillo Bulls come to town. It is former Wildcat Sean Keane's first game in Wichita Falls as a member of the opposition. The Bulls are 5-6-1 since the start of the 2011 calendar year after going 21-5-2 in the first half.
The Bulls are led in goals and points by Cody Freeman (20 goals, 20 assists, 40 points), while Zack Smoot and Derek Hills lead the squad with 23 assists each. The Wildcats are 2-5-0 against the Bulls this season. The two teams are developing quite a heated rivalry, with 6 fights, a near-fight between goalies, and 453 penalty minutes total in their seven games.
