Wildcats Continue Run at Playoff Spot

The Wildcats continued to climb in the NAHL south division standings with two wins over the weekend. The Cats played three games, posting a 2-1 record. They traveled to Texarkana on Friday night and defeated the Bandits 4-3. On Saturday the Wildcats were defeated by the Texas Tornado, but rebounded from that loss on Sunday, beating the Central Texas Marshals 6-4. The Cats started the weekend 5 points behind the fourth place Springfield Junior Blues, who hold the last spot in the playoffs. The Wildcats gained four points over the weekend, while the Junior Blues did not gain any, and now sit only 1 point away from a playoff spot.

On Friday the Cats traveled to the second place Texarkana Bandits and defeated them 4-3 on their home ice. The Cats needed a late surge in the third period to win the game. Brent Sarcone scored the first goal of the game giving the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. His power play goal was assisted by Kevin Huck and Chad Costello. The Bandits quickly tied the game at 1-1, but with less than a minute to play in the first period Kevin Huck put the Cats up 2-1 scoring a goal that was assisted by Niklas Flodin and Chad Costello. The Bandits scored the only goal of the second period tying the score at 2-2. The Bandits scored first in the third period and took the lead 3-2. The Wildcats Kevin Huck answered with a goal late in the third period tying the game. The goal was assisted by Nick Klaren and Chad Costello. With less than two minutes to play in the game Brent Sarcone scored the game winning goal. His goal was assisted by Peter Zamkochyan and Niklas Flodin.

On Saturday the Cats played at the Texas Tornado. The Cats were outplayed and lost the game 8-0.

The Wildcats were back at home on Sunday to take on the Central Texas Marshals. The Cats came out of the gates hot scoring 4 straight goals. After one period of play they had a comfortable 4-0 lead. The Wildcats could not put the Marshals out of the game, as they gave up 4 goals in a row allowing the Marshals to tie the game 4-4. With time running out in the second period Dave Lewandowski scored the game winning goal with assists from Peter Zamkochyan and Drew Walters. Andy Roberts added an empty net goal at the end of the game to make the final score 6-4. Lewandowski had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Brent Sarcone added 2 goals on the day. Dan Medenwaldt and Andy Roberts each added a goal, while Chad Costello added 2 assists. Skylur Jameson, Niklas Flodin, Jack Wolgemuth, Kevin Huck, Matt Bohlig, Peter Zamkochyan, and Drew Walters each had an assist on the day.

The Cats will be back in action at the Kay Yeager Coliseum this weekend when they will host the Fairbanks Ice Dogs on Friday and Saturday, and the Texas Tornado on Sunday. The Wildcats are quickly closing the gap on the fourth and final playoff spot, and in order to earn that spot hey will need all the help they can get this weekend from their home crowd.
