Wichita Wild News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wild (5-1) came out firing on all cylinders Saturday night in Omaha as they shredded the Beef (3-4) with a final score, 66-33. Exceptional play from RB Tywon Hubbard and WR Joe Kassanavoid who combined for five of the team's nine total touchdowns on the night, helped lead the team to a commanding victory in their fourth road game of the season.
The Wild defense flexed their muscles on the Beef's first drive of the game, keeping the Beef out of the end zone and turning the ball over on downs at the Wild three-yard line. A seven play, 42 yard drive with 5:14 left in the first quarter gave the Wild their first points of the game off a short pass from QB Rocky Hinds to WR Joe Kassanavoid for a 6-0 lead over the Beef. Omaha scored a touchdown of their own off a 10 yard pass from QB Chris Coffin to WR Anthony Parks, with the extra point to take the lead 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was explosive for the Wild offense, who totaled 24 points, beginning with K Ernesto Lacayo converting on a 31-yard field goal to take back the Wild lead, 9-7. Beef K Marcus Williams missed the chance to take back the lead for the Beef, failing to complete a 49 yard attempt, which turned into a 49-yard return by Hubbard to put Wichita in great field position. The Wild converted on that drive with Kassanavoid's second consecutive catch for a touchdown to extend their lead over the Beef 16-7. From then on, the game was all Wichita. The Beef were able to answer with a field goal, but could not stop Hubbard who ran for a touchdown and Hinds who would rush for one of his own to end the half with the Wild on top 30-13.
The third quarter was fairly quiet for both teams with a total of nine points scored, all belonging to Wichita. Hubbard found the end zone again on a one yard rush with 4:46 left in the quarter. DL Matt Moss recovered his fourth fumble of the year to stifle any rhythm the Beef offense had and putting the Wild in great field position that ended with a 28-yard field goal by Lacayo to give the Wild a 39-13 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams kicked up their intensity, scoring a combined 47 points in the final quarter. With 13:36 left in the fame, Omaha's RB Preston Brown rushed 14 yards into the end zone for a Beef touchdown to cut the Wild lead 39-19. In the ensuing drive, Hinds threw a 36-yard bomb to WR Charles Johnson for his first touchdown of the year to up the score, 46-19. The Beef then hit back immediately with a touchdown of their own off a 30-yard pass from Coffin to Parks for his second touchdown of the night. Wild still lead 46-26. Hubbard would also grab his second touchdown of the night, followed by another Beef touchdown. Omaha recovered their own onside kick, but DB Justin Phinisee snagged his second pick of the year with 7:00 left in the game to suffocate any hope of a Beef comeback. A short run by RB Junior Allen, followed by an interception returned for a touchdown by DB Dan Kontz, gave the Wild two consecutive scores to extend their lead. New Wild corner would recover a fumble to end the game with the Wild winning handily 66-33.
The Wild return home next week, Saturday, April 26th for Scout Night when the Oklahoma Defenders come to town.
