Wichita Wild News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wild (6-2) fell 13-11 to the Salina Bombers (6-2) on Saturday Night in the Bicentennial Center. Aside from a struggling Wild offense that obviously missed QB Rocky Hinds at the helm, the Wild defense was a bright spot on the night. Wichita's defense held Salina to only 13 points, an offense that averages 52.3 on the season. This was the first time the Bombers were able to come away with a win in that match-up and is only the second loss of the season for the Wild.
The Wild went completely scoreless in the first half, and the Bombers scoring all 13 points in the first half including two field goals scored (21, 24 yds.) by Michael Georgetti. A 43-yard pass from Bombers QB Robbie Nallenweg to WR Ricky Roberts resulted in a Bomber touchdown and a 13-0 lead over the Wild to end the first half. The Wild offense struggled mightily, with back-up QB, Joe Kassanavoid unable to find open receivers and the Bomber defense swarming RB Tywon Hubbard who accounted for 9 yards on 6 attempts.
Notoriously their highest scoring quarter all season, the Wild opened the 3rd quarter with a hard-fought, seven minute drive that ended in a Wild on the board thanks to an 11-yard field goal by Lacayo. Catchings and Moss were able to stop the Bomber offense with a huge sack on Nallenweg on the very next drive, giving the Wild great field position. However, the Wild offense would be unable to convert to end the third quarter, still down 13-3.
James McCartney blocked a field goal to open the fourth quarter and set the Wild up with a first and 10 at their own 17 yard line, but Lacayo missed from 41 yards out. The Wild defense came up big with under two minutes to go off a Matt Moss blocked the field goal for a safety to make the score, 13-5 with the Bombers still in the lead. The Wild offense was finally able to get something going with a short rush by Joe Kassanavoid for a touchdown. The Wild went for two, but would not be able to convert, leaving the score 13-11. Then with the onside kick, recovered by Kendrick Harper, was offset by an offside penalty. On the re-kick, another penalty ensued and the Bombers were able to run the clock out to take away a 13-11 win.
The Wild continue next week with a bye and then return home on Saturday, May 17th to face the Kansas Koyotes for Player Trading Card Night; kick-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling 800.745.3000 or visiting the Hartman Arena box office.
