WIFL names players of the month

April 4, 2007 - World Indoor Football League 2 (WIFL 2) News Release


Augusta Spartans wide receiver Marvin Stone, Columbus Lions linebacker Justin Rivers, and Osceola Ghostriders defensive lineman Harvey Joiner and kick returner Lamont Finnie have been named the World Indoor Football League players of the month for February-March 2007, it was announced today.

Voting was conducted among the four league coaches and league staff for the offensive, defensive, line and special team categories.

Profiles are as follows.

OFFENSE

Marvin Stone (Augusta Spartans) Currently leads the league in scoring with 54 points ... Has 25 catches for 273 yards and 8 TD ... tied with Daytona Beach's Cory McKinney for lead in receptions and touchdown catches ... caught the game-winning pass with 23 second remaining to lift Spartans to a 49-45 victory over then unbeaten Columbus Lions ... Had 110 yards and 2 TD in season-opening victory at Daytona Beach .. also has returned 12 kickoffs for a 20.2 average with one touchdown .. Played college ball at South Carolina State.

DEFENSE

Justin Rivers (Columbus Lions) Had major impact in two of Lions' first three victories ... Returned two fumbles for touchdowns in 34-31 victory over Osceola and blocked a PAT in the final minute of last Saturday's 28-27 decision over the Ghostriders ... Leads the Lions defense with 16.5 tackles, 2.5 TFL and one sack ... Two game MVP honors ... Former Ohio Valley Conference defensive player of the year at Eastern Kentucky.

Harvey Joiner (Osceola Ghostriders) Anchors a defensive line that gives up league lows of 27 rushing yards and 32 points per game ... Had four tackles and sack in season-opening victory against Augusta ... Named line MVP in two of four games this season. Played college ball at UCF.

Against Daytona Beach, returned six for 136 yards and one missed field goal for 43, setting up three Ghostrider touchdowns ... Had 4 returns for 100 yards in Columbus loss ... Is also Ghostriders' second leading receiver with 10 catches for 125 yards and 4 TD ... Played college at Bethune-Cookman.
