San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned wide receiver Fred Williams on a two-year contract. Williams burst onto the scene last season as a rookie, announcing his presence with some huge statistical performances late in the season. The Arena Football League's free agency period for exclusive negotiations with players from a team's 2012 roster opened on Monday, Oct. 15 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 28.
"We are very happy to have Fred returning," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He is a very talented receiver who proved last year that he can make big plays at this level."
Williams (6-0, 195, St. Cloud State) appeared in six games as a rookie last season, posting 41 receptions for 491 yards and 11 touchdowns, as well as scoring once on the ground. In addition, the Wisconsin native was dynamic in the return game late in the season, averaging 16.6 yards per return with a key touchdown in the playoff run on the road against the Chicago Rush on June 30.
Williams earned league weekly honors on three occasions in the regular season and once in the postseason. He led all SaberCats receivers with ten catches for 90 yards and two scores in San Jose's 51-48 loss in the playoffs against the eventual ArenaBowl champion Arizona Rattlers.
