Wichita Wings News Release
Wichita, KS. - The Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) will travel to the east coast to face the undefeated Baltimore Blast and the Syracuse Silver Knights (3-5) this weekend. The Wings will play the Blast Friday, December 7 at 7:35 p.m.(EST) in Baltimore and followed by a quick travel to Syracuse for a match against the Silver Knights the next day, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. (EST). These two games are both rematches from November when Baltimore and Syracuse traveled to Wichita.
The Wings, currently 1-4, are looking to regain the momentum they built with their first win of the season over Syracuse, but not before a tough 15-8 loss to Baltimore in their last match at home on November 23. The Wings will come into this weekend's matchups looking to play hard and fast and are hopeful the recent four-way trade with the Silver Knights, sending Jamar Beasley and Bryan Perez to Syracuse in exchange for Andre Berenzon and Matt Clare, will pay off.
Wichita claimed their first win of the season over Syracuse in Hartman Arena on November 18. The match proved to be a battle of each club's defense, sending the game into overtime at 6 apiece. Wichita went on the attack early gaining momentum by scoring the game's first 4 points. Matt Clare, now with the Wings, proved to be a key component in the Silver Knights' offense, with two of the team's three goals on the night that sent the game into overtime. A goal 7:28 into overtime by Freddy Moojen would clinch the Wings first win of the season; final score 8-6.
Wichita followed their win with a match against Baltimore in front of their home crowd on November 23. Baltimore scored immediately, and for the duration of the match the Wings defense struggled to disrupt the Blast's rhythm. Although the Wings came within two points of the Baltimore's lead, courtesy of goals from Moojen and Perez, the Blast offense proved to be too much for Wichita; dropping the game to Baltimore in a final score of 15-8.
On November 24, Baltimore took on the Missouri Comets, the only other undefeated team in the league. For the first time in any MISL game this season the first quarter was scoreless, demonstrating an extreme clash of defenses. In the second quarter, Blast forwards, Machel Millwood, Adraino Dos Santos and Nunex found the net, producing six points and leaving the Comets scoreless at the half, 6-0. Missouri came back with points on the board; however, the push was not enough as the Comets fell to the Blast in a final score of 12-4.
On December 2, Syracuse dominated their rivals, the Rochester Lancers, in a 23-8 affair. Syracuse started off slow as Rochester's Garret Pettis scored two goals early in the first quarter. Newly acquired Jamar Beasley, scored back to back goals before the half to help the Silver Knights gain the lead by halftime. Syracuse continued to dominate Rochester in the second half, scoring 17 more points to the Lancers' 4, leading them to a 23-8 victory over their rivals.
Key Match Up: Wichita's Offense vs. Opposing Defenses It is no secret that Wichita has struggled this season to put points on the board. When traveling to Baltimore and Syracuse, the Wings need to generate more scoring opportunities in order to walk away with a win.
Players to Watch: Andre Berenzon and Matt Clare As a result of Wichita's trade with Syracuse, midfielders, Berenzon and Clare will be two key additions to watch. In the Wings match against the Silver Knights, Clare scored two of the team's three goals on the night. Wichita is hoping the two new additions are the spark needed to raise their stock in the MISL standings.
