Wichita Wings News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - In what would turn out to be a tight match between the Wichita Wings and the Syracuse Silver Knights Sunday afternoon in Hartman Arena, the Wings pulled out their first win of the season in overtime against the Silver Knights off a Freddy Moojen 2-point goal for the go-ahead win; final score 8-6. A true team effort was on display for the Wings with scores from Hoxie, Geison, Ferrer and Moojen including multiple assists from Tiguinho.
The Wings started on defense, but slowly gained control of the ball and in less than two minutes into the game found their first points courtesy of Andrew Hoxie, current scoring leader of the team, to put the Wings up 2-0 with an assist from Tiguinho. This would be the only goal scored in the quarter with only five total shots on goal from either team.
The second quarter began with a quick goal again from the Wings scored by Geison 30 seconds in, extending Wichita's lead 4-0. In addition to the goal came three quick penalties for the Wings within the first three minutes of play. With 6:32 left before the half, midfielder, Matt Clare, put the Silver Knights on the board to cut the Wings lead down to two. Although both teams had several opportunities, neither team would convert before the conclusion of the first half.
Wichita would begin the second half of play with a strong defensive stand against Syracuse by way of two quick saves from Sanaldo to maintain the Wings' two point lead. Three minutes into the quarter Tiguinho assisted yet another one of his teammates, Miguel Ferrer, for a score to make the Wings lead 6-2. The Silver Knights' Matt Clare would answer again with a goal shortly after to cut the Wings lead to two once more. Neto of the Silver Knights committed two separate fouls over the quarter to put him in the penalty box for a nearly two minutes, however, the quarter would come to a close before the Wings could score off of the advantage.
In the final quarter, Neto would produce a goal for the Silver Knights with 6:00 to go to tie the game at 6 apiece. Both teams would produce strong defensive stands to send the game into overtime. Freddy Moojen would come up with a score for the Wings with 7:13 left in overtime to earn the Wings their first win of the season.
The Wings hope to extend their winning streak at home next Friday, November 23rd, against the undefeated Baltimore Blast.
