February 24, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

VANCOUVER, BC, February 24, 2005 - The Vancouver Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi, and head coach, Bob Lilley, today announced the signing of midfielder Jake Sagare.

"Jake is a versatile player that possesses good skill and has athletic qualities that make him a dangerous attacking player," said Lilley. "His ability to beat players off the dribble and deliver quality crosses will certainly be an asset to our club."

Sagare, 24, has played the last three seasons with Vancouver 's rival club, the Portland Timbers. Drafted by Portland in the third round (53rd overall) of the 2002 college draft, the 5'11", 165-pounder, has amassed five goals and nine assists in 52 caps for the Timbers.

Sagare, who has dual citizenship with England and the United States America, has also had two stints in Europe during his tenure in Portland. Prior to the 2003 season, Sagare spent time with Grimsby Town FC of the English First Division before returning to the Timbers midseason. Sagare also played for Halifax Town of the English Nationwide Conference following the 2003 USL season.

A native of Yakima, Washington, Sagare played three seasons with the Yakima Reds (1998-2000) in the PDL and one with the Seattle Sounders Select (2001). He registered one assist in his first two seasons but broke out in 2000 with 12 goals and four assists as he led the Reds to the PDL semifinals. He notched three goals and two assists in 2001. He also played his collegiate soccer in his home state at the University of Washington where he majored in communications. He was twice named to the All-Pac-10 Academic Second Team.
