Danbury Whalers News Release
The Danbury Whalers love playing on home ice. The Danbury crowd just seems to bring out that little extra drive in the team and last night was no exception. Tim Richter and Jarrett Rush had a goal and an assist apiece and Kevin Hoy made 24 saves as the Whalers defeated the Battalion Sunday night 5-3.
The Whalers picked up right where they left off the night before as Steve Brown got the scoring started at the 17:32 mark of the opening period. Brown carried the puck deep into the Battalion zone and fed a pass back to Jarrett Rush. Rush returned the puck back to Brown who unleashed a missile from just inside the right circle that beat goaltender Daniel Palmkvist high to the glove side. It was the 2nd tally of the season for Brown. Just forty-eight seconds late Ilya Solarev lit the lamp to make it 2-0 on another tremendous move. Solarev, who had a hat trick in last night's game, made a deke around Berkshire defenseman Ian Reopel and was able to tuck the puck under the legs of Palmkvist for his 7th goal of the season. After another forty-eight seconds ticked off the clock, it was Luke Warner's turn to join the score sheet. David Lun won the race to the loose puck in the offensive zone. He slid a nifty pass back to Ben Schoeneberger who took a wrist shot on goal that was kicked out by Palmkvist right to the stick of Warner in front who buried it home for his 1st goal of the year. The home team took the three goal advantage into the first intermission, while out shooting Berkshire 11-6.
The Danbury offense kept rolling in the second period courtesy of two power play goals. First it was CT native Tim Richter who was the beneficiary of a beautiful set up in front from David Lun. Richter's initial shot was stopped by Palmkvist but the rebound found its way home to make it 4-0 Whalers. It was the 2nd goal of the year for Richter who had missed the previous two games. Then at 7:42 Jarrett Rush collected his 1st of the season, blasting a shot from the point past the goaltender and making it 6-0 in favor of Danbury. The Battalion got on the board at the 17:08 mark of the second as Michael Kaslowskas found the back of the net with his 3rd of the season on a wrist shot from the slot that beat Danbury goaltender Kevin Hoy. The Whalers held a 5-1 advantage after two periods.
The Battalion got closer in the third period first on the 2nd goal of the season for Vadim Guskov. A clearing attempt by Luke Warner deflected off of Berkshire's Martin Uhnak right onto the stick of Guskov who beat Hoy to the blocker side to make it 5-2. Less than two minutes later Lester Brown collected his 4th tally of the season to make it 5-3. A shot from Tristan Lysko found its way through a screen where Kevin Hoy was able to make the initial save, but Brown was waiting on the doorstep to bury it home to make it a two goal game. But that's as close as the Battalion would get as the Whalers were able to hang on for the 5-3 victory and pass Berkshire for 3rd place in the FHL.
Game Notes:
The Battalion skated without Matthew Hamilton (stitches) Kevin Morrison (Ankle) and Andrew Dadds (Groin)... Daniel Palmkvist finished with 20 saves on 25 shots while Louie George was a perfect 10 for 10 in relief.... The Whalers are back in action on Thursday night when they host the Danville Dashers. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30.
