Danbury Whalers News Release

Danbury CT- Sometimes it doesn't matter how you win, but just that you get the win period. Thursday night was not the best effort from the Danbury Whalers. They were out played and out shot for most of the game, yet they found a way to stay in it and came away with a 5-4 shoot out win over the Danville Dashers Thursday night. Ian Delong had two goals, Ryan Patsch had a goal and an assist and Mike Brown made 54 saves to guide the home team to victory.

The Danville Dashers came out playing like the better team in the opening period, controlling the flow of play for most of the frame while keeping the pressure on the Whalers defense. It took until about six minutes into the game for the Whalers to record their first shot on goal. Then at the 13:11 mark of the first Andrew Harrison gave the Dashers the lead with his 5th goal of the season. James Gordon sent the puck off the boards and into the Danbury end where Harrison won the race to the puck and was able to deke around Mike Brown and send a backhander into the open cage to make it 1-0. The lead would be short lived however, as Luke Warner collected his 2nd goal of the season just fifty seconds later to tie it up at 1-1. Ryan Patsch got the puck to the front of the net where Danville goaltender Matt Anthony made an initial stop, but the bouncing puck landed on the stick of Warner who was able to whack it home. Tim Richter was rewarded with the secondary assist on the goal. The two teams went into the first intermission knotted at one with Danville outshooting Danbury 16-7.

The Dasher's impressive play continued into the second period as they kept frustrating the Whalers offense and carrying the play throughout. Danville took the lead at 6:16 of the middle frame as Jonathan Juliano connected for his 3rd of the season. Clinton Atkinson made a pretty pass through the neutral zone onto the stick of Juliano who got behind the Whalers defense and moved in all alone on Mike Brown beating him low to the blocker side to make it 2-1 Danville. The Whalers would respond at 11:29 of the second as Ian Delong collected his 3rd goal of the season on the Power Play to tie the game at 2-2. Brett Liscomb made a quick pass through the slot right onto the stick of Delong who buried the puck into the open net past Danville goaltender Matt Anthony. It would stay that way until 14:37 when Gehrett Sargis would break the tie with his 5th goal of the season. After some good offensive zone pressure by the Dashers, the puck was left in the right circle where Sargis was able to collect the loose puck and bury a shot between the legs of Brown to make it 3-2. The Dashers out shot Danbury 35-11 through two periods of play and were given an opportunity to stay in the hockey game thanks to the strong play of Brown in goal.

In the third period the Whalers came out with a much better effort, playing their best period of the night. At 4:44 of the third Ryan Patsch tallied his 4th goal of the season to tie the game up at 3-3. A simple shot the goal by Jarret Rush got kicked out by the pad of Matt Anthony right to the slot where Patsch fired it home and gave the home team new life. Danbury took their fist lead of the game at 13:55 as Ian Delong notched his 2nd of the game and 4th of the season. Once again a beautiful set up by Brett Liscomb into the slot where Delong was able to tap it into the empty cage to make 4-3 Whalers. The Dashers would fight back however, as Gehrett Sargis scored his 2nd of the game and 6th pf the season to tie the game up at 4-4. Right off the faceoff, Dashers forward Justin Levac pushed the puck to his line mate Sargis who fired a wrist shot past Brown low to the blocker side. This one would have to be decided in extra time.

In the overtime period, both teams had good chances to score the game winner yet couldn't come away with the goal. The best chance for either team came for Danville in the middle of overtime as Sargis fired a wrist shot on goal that squeezed through the legs of Brown but trickled wide of the far post. Danville out shot Danbury 5-1 in the overtime period for a game total of 58-30.

In the shootout, Matt Caranci connected in the 4th round for Danbury to send the home team home victorious in the shootout 2-1 and the game 5-4. Gehrett Sargis scored for Danville, while Scott Morngell collected the other shootout goal for the Whalers.

Game Notes:

There were only three power plays the entire game. Danbury was 1 for 2 while Danville was 0 for1...Matt Anthony made 26 saves in the loss for Danville...Danville was without Joe Pace for the game as he served his suspension.
