Whale Sign 2014 Swedish Olympian Lowenhielm

The Connecticut Whale today announced the signing of center Michelle Löwenhielm, a member of Team Sweden at the 2014 Olympics who just completed four years of collegiate play at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The club has also signed goaltender Sam Walther, the NESCAC Women's Hockey Player of the Year from Hamilton.

"For me, it's all about finding an environment to help me grow as a person and develop as a player, and being a part of the NWHL and Connecticut Whale does that," said Löwenhielm, 23. "Playing against and playing with the best players in the world will be both fun and challenging. I was really happy and excited to sign this contract because that meant that I was able to make one of my dreams come true."

As a 19-year-old with Sweden at the Olympics, the 5-8 Löwenhielm had a goal and two assists in six games. At Minnesota Duluth from 2014-2018, she was 10-32-42 in 144 games.

Löwenhielm also represented Sweden at various other international tournaments, including two IIHF World Championships, and hopes to do so again.

"Playing for Team Sweden is always an honor and a privilege," she said. "Being able to represent Team Sweden in the 2014 Olympics meant more than I can ever describe. It's something you dream about as a kid and always work hard towards. That's why I would absolutely love to be able to represent Sweden in another Olympics. It's my goal and would be another dream come true."

As a senior at Hamilton College last season, Walther set school records by posting a 1.08 GAA, .960 save percentage and ten shutouts, and was named NESCAC Player of the Year. She was also named by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) to the All-America team as a junior. Prior to Hamilton, Walther played in the Pittsburgh Pens Elite program for four years.
