West Oahu Out-Slugs Waikiki

November 2, 2008 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
West Oahu CaneFires News Release

West Oahu pounded out 14 hits, and received at least one base knock from each of its offensive starters as the CaneFires defeated Waikiki, 13-8, tonight at Hans L'Orange Park.

Miles Durham and Wally Crancer paced West Oahu with three RBIs on two hits each, and teammate Tyler Henson went 2-4 with two RBIs. Henson also notched his 11th double of the season, and the Baltimore Orioles prospect moved into a tie with Waikiki's Todd Frazier for the league lead in the category.

The CaneFires (13-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Durham's two run single off Waikiki starter Javy Guerra that plated Mark Hallberg and Kyle Peter. Hallberg, a prospect with the Arizona Diamondbacks, has now reached base in a league-high 22 consecutive games.

West Oahu added two more runs in the third inning on Henson's double that plated Adam Loewen and Durham.

After both squads added a run in the fourth, Waikiki (14-12) narrowed the deficit to 5-4 in the fifth thanks to a three-run inning sparked by a Damon Sublett RBI double, and Roger Kieschnick's RBI single.

But the CaneFires pulled away for good in the home half of the inning with a five-run outburst highlighted by a two-run single from Crancer, and an RBI single off the bat of Hallberg.

The BeachBoys received two RBIs apiece from Sublett, Kieschnick and Yonder Alonso, while James McOwen chipped in three hits in defeat.

West Oahu starter Chris Salberg (2-0) notched the victory after tossing 4 2/3 innings through which he struck out three and allowed four runs on five hits.

Guerra (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five through 2 1/3 innings.

The squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the finale of a three-game series.
