NLL National Lacrosse League

West defeats East 3-2 at Pepsi Center on eve of All-Star Game

March 6, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release

The West All-Stars edged the East All-Stars 3-2 in the five sets of All-Star Skills Competitions on Friday night. The event capped the first day of All-Star Weekend at Pepsi Center in Denver, home of the Colorado Mammoth.

In the Goalie Long Shot competition, Ken Montour (Buffalo) edged Anthony Cosmo (Boston) and Andrew Leyshon (Colorado) by making two long shots into a goal approximately 50 yards away from his crease. (East 1, West 0)

In the Shooting Accuracy competition, forwards had ten shots to hit six round targets on the goal; the four corners and mid-level on the left and right sides of the goal. Jeff Zywicki (San Jose) won the contest, hitting 5 out of 6. Shawn Williams (Rochester) hit 4 out of 6 to place second. (East 1, West 1)

The Fastest Shot winner was Stephen Peyser (New York). The rookie out of Johns Hopkins University ripped a shot that was clocked at 105 miles per hour. Roger Vyse (Buffalo) was clocked at 92. Brodie Merrill (Portland) was clocked at 91. (East 2, West 1)

Perhaps the most electrifying moments of a very entertaining evening came during the Trick Shot contest, an annual fan favorite. The most creative goal attempts came from Mark Steenhuis (Buffalo) in a combo effort with Pat Maddalena (New York) that involved trickery and a mascot's costume; and Dan Dawson (Boston) who scored while riding on the back of a mini-go cart and later scoring on a goal that size of an office waste paper basket. In the final, a goal with fancy stick work from Jeff Shattler (Calgary) was the winner. (East 2, West 2)

The Rapid Fire contest put the goaltenders on the front lines as they faced a non-stop barrage of shots for two minutes. West goalie Andrew Leyshon (Colorado) held the East team to 14 goals during the barrage of shots, while Cosmo and Montour split the time in the East net, allowing 16 goals to West team. The victory by the West team in this final event gave the West a 3-2 win in events for the skills competition.
