Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
ABILENE, TX - Joe Weik's offseason will be short-lived. Shortly after the Prairie Dogs' season concludes on September 3, the power hitting outfielder will ship off to Nicaragua to begin a winter league season with the Leon Lions.
Weik, 24, has been wildly successful with Abilene in 2012. Through the first half of the season, the Grapevine, Texas native led the United League in batting average, home runs, R.B.I.s, runs scored, and total bases. At the moment - with 1/3 of the 96-game schedule remaining - Weik is second in the league in home runs (11) and runs scored (50), third in batting (.354) and hits (85), and he leads the league in runs driven in (46).
Leon, located on Nicaragua's west Coast, is the second largest city in the country with a population of 175,000. Weik will depart for Central America in October.
Joe played college baseball at TCU in 2010 - when the Horned Frogs reached the College World Series - and in 2011.
Weik, a former Diamondbacks farmhand, played at the rookie level with Arizona in 2011 when he hit a pair of home runs and collected 12 doubles over 158 at-bats.
The Prairie Dogs are off this evening before beginning a two-game series with Edinburg on Wednesday at Walt Driggers Field. The Game starts at 7:05 and the gates to the park open at 6:00. If you cannot make it to the game, hear all the action on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame.
