USL Week 9 pro honors announced
Hemming, Thorpe named Players of the Week
TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced the Team of the Week honors for the ninth week of the USL season, honoring Charleston's Tyler Hemming as the USL First Division Player of the Week and Western Mass' James Thorpe as the USL Second Division Player of the Week.
The 2008 US Open Cup finalist Charleston Battery lost the league's Rookie of the Year in Osvaldo Alonso to the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer. But it appears the midfielder they picked up essentially in return from MLS is filling in quite nicely as Tyler Hemming helped lead the club to a win and a draw in Austin over the weekend that pushed the lone unbeaten club into the top spot in the table.

US Open Cup kicks off tonight
Four First Round matches available on USLlive.com
TAMPA, FL -- On a regular Saturday night during the regular season only 10-12 professional clubs are in action in the USL First Division and USL Second Division. On Tuesday evening all 16 US-based pro clubs will be in action as they help kick off the 2009 edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with First Round contests. Most will face amateur sides, but a few of the 16 games will pit professional clubs versus one another.
At least three professional league sides will see their 2009 tournament run end early with the USL-2 Richmond Kickers visiting the Carolina RailHawks of USL-1 and the USL First Division's Rochester Rhinos, the 1999 tournament champions, hosting the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a pair of inter-league contests while USL Second Division rival Charlotte Eagles and Wilmington Hammerheads square off.
Countering the all-pro contests are three all-amateur affairs. The Chicago Fire of the PDL host tournament veteran out of the USASA Milwaukee Bavarians while the PDL Orange County Blue Star host Sonoma County Sol. The PDL's El Paso Patriots, tournament finalists in 1995, face the visiting Arizona Sahuaros.
