FLORIDA FIRECATS (1-0) AT MANCHESTER WOLVES (0-0)
FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2005 - VERIZON WIRELESS ARENA (9,650) 7:30 P.M. ET
AFL Hall of Famer BEN BENNETT coaches his first game with Manchester against some familiar faces. Last season, BENNETT led the Firecats to their second ArenaCup Championship in three years with one of the greatest defenses in af2 history. New Florida Head Coach KEVIN BOUIS hopes for similar success this season and what better way to prove his abilities than to beat his former mentor. Wolves QB JAKE EATON looks to step in for the departed QB CHRIS SANDERS but should have any easy transition with the return of explosive WR/LB REGGIE ROBINSON. The Firecats have lost QB KEN MASTROLE, OS CAINON LAMB, and DS QUINCY SORRELL, which leave some important holes to fill in both production and leadership. Last week the Firecats opened the season with some last second heroics by OS MAGIC BENTON to give the Firecats a 35-32 victory at Macon. On Friday, Florida looks to keep the ball rolling and prove to the league that they deserve to remain among the af2 elite. These two teams have never met before and will no doubt battle for that inaugural series victory and given the coaching swap, this could quickly become one of af2's best rivalries.
ALBANY CONQUEST (0-0) AT GREEN BAY BLIZZARD (0-0)
FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2005 - THE RESCH CENTER (7,995) 8:00 P.M. ET
Two of arenafootball2's most overhauled teams look to kickoff the 2005 campaign with a victory. New Albany Head Coach RICHARD DAVIS returns to af2 after one year away taking over what looks to be one of the league's most explosive offenses. With the return of experienced QB D BRYANT and the additions of WR/DB MARTINO THEUS and OS JERALD BURLEY, the Conquest come into 2005 with a lot of talent on offense. While the Blizzard come back this season with only three returning players from their 2004 roster, there is still reason for great optimism. 2003 af2 Rookie of the Year JOHNNY TURMAN is now at the Blizzard reigns after spending one season with the Indiana Firebirds of the AFL. Also joining the Blizzard is first year Head Coach BOB LANDSEE who spent last season as the line coach for TURMAN'S Firebirds team. TURMAN should immediately create the spark the Green Bay hopeful have been waiting for while the high powered Conquest offense shift into high gear on the fuel of their veteran leadership. This is the third meeting between these two teams with the series currently tied at one game apiece.
MEMPHIS XPLORERS (1-0) AT AMARILLO DUSTERS (1-0)
FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2005 - AMARILLO CIVIC CENTER (4,870) 8:00 P.M. ET
It didn't take long for the expansion Dusters to earn some respect as they lit up a solid Tulsa Talons team for 28 points in the fourth quarter of last week's season opener. WR/DB CRAIG FULTON JR. pulled in the game-winning 24-yard touchdown pass from QB JULIAN REESE with just 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock to give Amarillo the 62-55 win and their first ever victory in arenafootball2. The Xplorers proved to everyone last week that they are the team to beat in the National Conference. The "X-Men" dominated at Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings 63-24 holding them to zero second half points. Memphis forced five turnovers in just six Battle Wings' second half possessions with the only other drive ending in a 64-yd field goal attempt which fell way short. This Friday both teams look to get a leg up in the Midwest division as Memphis tries to continue its dominance and Amarillo is out to prove that last week's comeback was not a fluke.
