April 13, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS (1-1) AT DAYTONA BEACH THUNDERBIRDS (0-2)
MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2008 - Ocean Center (8,000) 7:00 P.M. ET
Monday night football comes to Daytona Beach as the ThunderBirds host South Georgia at the Ocean Center. The Wildcats, ranked No. 14 in the latest league coaches poll, are coming off a 50-43 loss to Louisville in Week 2. QB CECIL LESTER had 283 yards passing and six touchdowns but three interceptions proved too costly for the Wildcats. Back-to-back holding calls, however, one of those nullifying what would have been a P.J. Berry 46-yard TD, forced the Wildcats into a hole that they could not pull themselves out of. WR P.J. BERRY had another stellar showing for South Georgia with eight receptions for 140 yards and three scores. Antwone Savage had a great return to his hometown of Albany with seven catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns. Berry and Lester's offensive numbers from the first two weeks of the season have them among the league leaders in receiving and passing, respectively. The Wildcats also welcome back WR SCOTT CLOMAN and DL JOE WOOLRIDGE this week, two impact players from last season's 10-win team. The ThunderBirds enter Week 3 after two humbling losses to start their first af2 season. This week the team brought in GARY COMPTON to take over the head coaching duties. Compton coached in the af2 with Bakersfield in 2006-07 and led the Blitz to a postseason berth in 2006. He also enjoyed a 13-year career as an AFL player. Daytona Beach's most recent result was a 68-14 loss last week to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. WR Toris Rutledge caught five passes for 29 yards and a touchdown while QB Scott Jefferies passed for 76 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort. DB George Williams had a team-high 5.0 tackles, one forced fumble and two pass breakups. Nine turnovers in the team's first two games haven't helped Daytona Beach's cause. Expect the ThunderBirds to be a more focused and more efficient football team this week. South Georgia, however, should come out ahead as the team's roster is loaded with talent.
MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2008 - Wells Fargo Arena (8,403) 8:05 P.M. ET
Arena Football officially returns to Iowa Monday night as the Barnstormers play host to Lexington at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Horsemen enter their third af2 game after a Week 2 loss to Peoria, 46-28. Lexington kept things close until the latter stages of the fourth quarter. The Horsemen hurt their own cause with four turnovers (2 INTs, 2 fumbles) overall. QB EDDIE EVISTON finished 20-of-39 for 190 yards with three touchdowns, but was intercepted twice. WR HARRY LEWIS caught seven passes for 72 yards with a touchdown, while CHAD SPENCER had four grabs for 55 yards and a score. Eviston has completed just 52.9 percent (37-of-70) of his passes to date. Lewis leads Lexington in receiving yards with 109 on 11 receptions. Defensively, J.T. HASKINS leads the team with 11.5 tackles on the year. As a unit, the Horsemen's defense has only forced one turnover in two contests. The Barnstormers should be well rested after a bye in Week 2. Their only action to date was a 58-28 road loss in Week 1 to Louisville. In that contest Iowa struggled to move the ball early on and Louisville capitalized. The Fire were hot and started the game with 37 straight points before the Barnstormers' first score with just over 1:30 remaining in the first half. Turnovers did in Iowa in the first half as the Barnstormers gave the ball away on their first four possessions (2 INTs, 1 FR, safety) and missed a field goal on their fifth possession of the opening half. The Fire scored two times on defense during the stretch. ROBERT KILOW scored the first touchdown of the year for Iowa on a 56-yard kick return TD with less than two minutes to play in the first half. Kilow scored the second touchdown as well for the Barnstormers on a 2-yard reception from QB DAVON VINSON early in the third quarter. Kilow accumulated 229 all-purpose yards, including 101 receiving yards and two scores. The Barnstormers also feature WR/LB KEVIN WILLIAMS (2nd all-time scorer in af2 history) With a crowd expected at over 8,000 strong, Iowa fans will be fired up for Arena Football and the Barnstormers. Regardless of who comes out ahead, this game should be a fun one to watch.
