FRIDAY, MAY 13
Tulsa Talons 41, BAKERSFIELD BLITZ 31 (Attendance: 3,095)
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Tulsa Talons (4-2) moved into a tie for first place in the West Division with a 41-31 victory over the Bakersfield Blitz (2-4) at Rabobank Arena. The Talons took a 21-14 lead with 41 seconds left in the first half on a Shan Jordan six-yard touchdown run. When the Blitz couldn't score before the end of the half Tulsa attempted, and recovered, an onside kick to start the second half. Tulsa finished the drive with one of Corky Martin's two touchdown runs to go up by two possessions and take control of the game for the rest of the night. Robert Reed caught seven passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. On defense Reed recorded two interceptions and assisted on a tackle for loss to be named the U.S. Army Ironman of the game. The Talons defense held Blitz quarterback Jason Thomas to only one touchdown pass. Kika Kaululaau recorded one sack for the Blitz.
SATURDAY, MAY 14
Manchester Wolves 48, ALBANY CONQUEST 47 (Attendance: 4,541)
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Manchester Wolves (5-1) kept pace in the East Division with a tight 48-47 victory over the Albany Conquest (2-4) at Pepsi Arena. Albany had their shot to win the contest, but a 24-yard Marc Samuel field goal attempt hit the right upright as time expired. Manchester held a 35-33 lead at the end of 30 minutes and their defense then took over in the second half. Manchester had a chance to put the game away in the final minutes, but J.J. McKelvey fumbled Albany's Donte Wells jumped on the loose ball with one minute remaining. That set up Albany's late drive down the field and Samuel's last-second miss. McKelvey won Offensive Player of the Game with his nine catch, 139 yards and two-touchdown performance. Albany's Cy Butler won the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game. On offense Butler rushed for 20 yards and one touchdown. He caught seven passes for 46 yards and registered 68 return yards. On defense he recorded 2.0 tackles.
SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS 62, Arkansas Twisters 48 (Attendance: 6,692)
ALBANY, Ga. - The South Georgia Wildcats (2-4) moved into a tie for second place in the South Division with a 62-48 win over the Arkansas Twisters (0-6) at the Albany Civic Center. The Wildcats started the game in the best possible way when Arkansas couldn't handle the opening kickoff off the nets and Rob Keefe picked it up for a touchdown. The Wildcats then forced a turnover on downs by the Twisters and moved the ball downfield for Keefe to score from one yard out. The early 14-point deficit made Arkansas chase points the whole night and they could never recover. For Arkansas, Kevin Whitley caught 11 passes for 119 yards and one touchdown. Darnell Small scored two rushing touchdowns and recorded one interception. For the Wildcats, Bobby Pesavento completed 21 of 30 passes for six touchdowns and one interception. His six touchdowns went to three different receivers.
BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT BATTLE WINGS 28, Florida Firecats 22 (Attendance 1,770)
BOSSIER CITY, La. - In the upset of the season, the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (2-5) dealt the defending champion Florida Firecats (5-1) their first loss of the year by a 28-22 margin at the Century Tel Center. The Battle Wings held on to the ball for 35 minutes, 11 more than the Firecats, and rushed for 53 yards against the best run defense in the league. The winning score was a seven-yard pass from Tim Hicks to Reggie Perkins. It was the end of a 12-play, 32-yard drive that took 8:19 off the fourth quarter clock. When Florida got the ball back Kendel Shello forced a Chris Wallace fumble with Joe Wesley of the 'Wings jumping on it with 52 seconds left. The Wings couldn't turn the turnover into points and the Firecats had one last drive left, but after reaching the opponents 12-yard line, the Firecats ran out of time. Magic Benton finished with seven catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns for Florida. Bo Smith caught four passes for only 18 yards but two touchdowns for Bossier-Shreveport. Roy Stabler, in his first game back from an injury, recorded one interception for the Firecats.
GREEN BAY BLIZZARD 65, Louisville Fire 49 (Attendance: 4,534)
GREEN BAY, Wis. - By jumping out to a 21-0 lead the Green Bay Blizzard (5-1) moved ahead of the Louisville Fire (4-2) in the East Division with a 65-49 victory at the Resch Center. The star of the game was fullback Matt Huebner. The rookie rushed for three touchdowns and recovered a fumble for a touchdown to help the Blizzard to their best start in franchise history. The Blizzard were without star receiver Troy Mason, but Brent Holmes stepped up catching six passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Bowers had two more interceptions to bring his total to seven on the season. Louisville quarterback Matt Sauk completed 32 of 46 passes for 342 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions. Fire receiver Rob Mager caught 12 passes for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Louisville gets a rematch in Week 12 at Freedom Hall.
MEMPHIS XPLORERS 46, Amarillo Dusters 40 (Attendance: 2,518)
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Memphis Xplorers (6-1) took the lead in the Midwest Division by defeating the Amarillo Dusters (4-2) 46-40 at the DeSoto Civic Center. With Memphis down by one in the second quarter the Xplorers went on a 28-point run. The scoring barrage included a Steven Green two-point drop kick extra point, to take control of the game. The Dusters got within six points with 16 seconds left, but couldn't recover an onside kick to get any closer. Kevin Prentiss caught 12 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns for Memphis. Julian Reese threw six touchdown passes for Amarillo, but also threw two interceptions. Chavis McCollister caught nine passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Charles Davis broke up three passes, recorded a tackle for a loss of ten yards, recovered a fumble and picked off a pass on defense for the Dusters. Memphis' Brian Jones was 19 of 30 for 237 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and two rushing touchdowns.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers 63, QUAD CITY 55 (Attendance: 6,322)
MOLINE, Ill. - QB Sam Clemons had a chance to lead his Quad City Steamwheelers (3-3) into a game tying opportunity but was sacked at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers' (4-2) eight-yard line as time expired. Clemons completed 26 of 35 passes for 310 yards and seven touchdowns but was matched by Pioneers' QB Kyle Rowley, who earned Offensive Player of the Game honors, completing 25-for-33 for 323 yards and six TDs on the night. 'Wheeler kick returner Travis Burns fumbled a key third-quarter kickoff which the Pioneers recovered. 6,332 fans saw the Steamwheelers lose their fourth straight game to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers including their second this season. ADT Defensive Player of the Game was Pioneer Ronnie Kaymore while U.S. Army Ironman of the Game accolade went to Tim Dodge of Quad City.
SAN DIEGO RIPTIDE 77, Birmingham Steeldogs 44 (Attendance: 2,832)
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego Riptide (2-4) outscored the Birmingham Steeldogs (0-6) every quarter, cruising to a 77-44 victory. The win is San Diego's second of the season and second over Birmingham this year. Quarterback Kane Claunch returned to the Riptide and completed 23 of 32 passes for 252 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions. His main target was Nian Taylor, who finished with 11 catches for 106 yards and five touchdowns. Ryan Smith caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown while rushing in a touchdown as well. The Riptide defense was impressive, forcing four turnovers. New quarterback Birmingham quarterback Roger Linn was 17 of 32 for 256 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. The game featured a wild end to the first half. San Diego scored a touchdown with 15 seconds left and kicked off to Birmingham. After one play the Steeldogs advanced to the San Diego nine and tried a field goal with four seconds left. The kick was no good and San Diego took over with just two seconds left. The Riptide tried a running play to run off the clock but Deon White forced a Jeff Macrea fumble and White jumped on the ball for a Birmingham touchdown.
Rio Grande Valley Dorados 61, CENTRAL VALLEY COYOTES 51 (Attendance: 2,256)
FRESNO, Calif. - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados (3-3) stopped the Central Valley Coyotes (4-2) from extending their three-game winning streak Saturday at the Selland Arena. The Dorados took charge in the fourth quarter lighting up the scoreboard for 33 points while a swarming defense forced the Coyotes into a few mistakes including three turnovers. WR/DB DeRonn Finley had an impressive showing in the loss putting in four touchdowns earning him Offensive Player of the Game honors. Dorados QB Josh Kellet went 20-of-31 passing for 228 yards throwing five touchdown passes and rushing for another two. ADT Defensive Player of the Game was Ben McCombs who forced Coyotes QB Juston Wood into errant throws including two fourth quarter interceptions. The U.S. Army Ironman of the Game award went to the Dorados' Travis McAlpine who had 10 receptions for 99 yards and two interceptions.
