Roanoke Steam (5-5) 45, Carolina Rhinos (2-7) 14

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Roanoke Steam snapped a three-game losing streak, beating the Carolina Rhinos 45-14 Friday night before 6,152 fans at the BI-LO Center.

Roanoke's SEAN PETERSON replaced starting QB MIKE VOLARVICH and completed 13-of-21 passes for 155 yards and three scores. He also rushed for another score and was named the MVP of the game. KENAN McWHORTER led all receivers with six catches for 78 yards. JAMES EVERIDGE caught two of Roanoke's four passing touchdowns.

GLENN YOUNG earned both Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors, recording one safety, a forced fumble, four solo tackles and two sacks. COREY CLARK led all tacklers with 6.5 on the night, and also recorded an interception. The Steam defense held the Rhinos scoreless the entire second half.

For Carolina, RAMONE ROBINSON completed 11-of-32 passes for 96 yards. He also rushed for 51 yards on four carries and tallied the team's only two scores. ROBERT GARTH led the Rhinos with three receptions for 34 yards. Defensively, VICTOR WHARTON led the Rhinos with four tackles. ARKEE THOMPSON tallied an interception and a game-high six passes defended.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (3-7) 49, Mohegan Wolves (3-7) 40

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers kept their playoff hopes alive with 49-40 win over the Mohegan Wolves Friday night before a crowd of 4,548 people at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Mohegan came within two points of the Pioneers midway through the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton added another touchdown and then Mohegan fumbled on its next possession, dashing any hopes of a comeback.

QB BRYAN SNYDER led the Pioneers, passing for 230 yards and six touchdowns en route to being named Most Valuable Player. WR/DB AMAN ABYE was named Ironman of the Game as he tallied six receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown to go with his game-high 6.5 tackles and an interception. Lineman TIM ARGIRIADI was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game, recording the game's only sack. JOHN KNUST led the Pioneers with eight catches for 84 yards and three touchdowns.

For Mohegan, QB CABLE DAVIS completed 24-of-40 passes for 249 yards and three scores. Davis' favorite target was ANDY MACAIONE, who hauled in 14 passes for a game-high 110 yards. On defense, HERON O'NEAL led the Wolves with five tackles and nabbed an interception.

Birmingham Steeldogs (7-2) 45, Louisville Fire (1-8) 32

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham rebounded from a subpar first half to outscore Louisville 30-23 in the second stanza and earn a 45-32 victory in front of 5,432 fans at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center.

The Fire held Birmingham to just 190 yards of total offense, but was unable to capitalize on its defensive efforts by converting on its own offensive chances. MATT HICKS and DAN ENGLISH split time under center for the Fire, passing for a combined 232 yards and three touchdowns. Louisville's ANTHONY PAYTON led all receivers with six catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

MONTRESSA KIRBY threw for 175 yards and four touchdowns to guide the Steeldogs to their second consecutive victory. Game MVP WAYNE THOMAS was on the receiving end of two scores, finishing the night with nine catches for 116 yards. Kirby also connected with ANTHONY JORDAN and JERRY TURNER on touchdown passes that pushed a tenuous 24-19 fourth-quarter lead from 24-19 to 39-19.

Jordan received Ironman honors after catching his 16-yard TD pass on offense and recording 2.5 tackles on defense. JOHNNY ANDERSON picked up ADT Defensive Player of the Game accolades, recording 2.0 tackles and returning a fumble 20 yards for a score.

Florida Firecats (5-4) 40, Mobile Wizards (0-10) 37

MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile held a late 37-30 lead, but was unable to hold on for its first victory of the season, as BRYAN SPARACINO led the Florida Firecats to a 40-37 come-from-behind victory that was capped by a 20-yard BRANDON KORNBLUE field goal with one second remaining.

The Wizards led 37-30 following a RHAOUL GUILLAUME 31-yard field goal with 3:43 left in the contest. However, Sparacino brought Florida back with a 27-yard TD pass to ANTHONY DIXON with 2:17 left to tie the game at 37-37. After KENDRICK LEE's 25-yard kickoff return, QB MELVIN HILL fumbled on the opening play of the Wizards' potential game-clinching drive. Dixon recovered at the Mobile 10-yard line and the Firecats milked the clock down for Kornblue's game-winner.

Hill threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wizards. Mobile's JAWAL DILL finished with 130 yards and a score. For Florida, game MVP KENNY CAUSEY amassed 211 all-purpose yards, including 64 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions.

DAVID BARNARD led the Firecats' defense with a fumble recovery in the end zone midway through the second quarter, giving Florida an early 17-7 lead. For Mobile, ADT Defensive Player of the Game T.J. PERRY picked off a pass and recorded six tackles to lead the Wizards.

Charleston Swamp Foxes (4-5) 40, Norfolk Nighthawks (3-6) 37

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Swamp Foxes snapped a two-game losing skid and remained perfect at home with a 40-37 win over the Norfolk Nighthawks Saturday night in front of 2,580 fans at North Charleston Coliseum. Charleston also picked up its first win over the 'Hawks in the four-game series.

A pair of college teammates led the Swamp Foxes. DWAYNE WILMOT and BEN CHRISTOPHER, who both attended the University of Maine, combined for 92 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Christopher added three solo tackles, forced a fumble and had an interception en route to earning the game's Ironman award.

Rookie QB MIKE BATH completed 7-of-21 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. He also added two rushing scores, both from three yards out, and was named the game MVP. MICHAEL BROWN nabbed ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors, leading all tacklers with 5.5 on the night. He also had an interception, one fumble recovery and three passes defended.

Norfolk's "Killer B's" of GARY BRIGGS, TRAVIS BURNS and DOMINIC BANKS combined for 188 yards and four touchdowns on the night. QB CHRIS WALLACE (15-of-40, 218 yards) accounted for the four scores, but also threw a pair of interceptions. Burns tallied 94 yards and three touchdowns receiving to lead the 'Hawks.

Richmond Speed (8-1) 49, Rochester Brigade (5-5) 41

RICHMOND, Va. - A 23-0 run to start the game put the Richmond Speed on course for a 49-41 victory against the visiting Rochester Brigade Saturday night before 4,234 fans at the Richmond Coliseum.

After Richmond jumped out to a 23-0 lead, the Brigade mounted a tremendous comeback in the fourth quarter. Registering 14 unanswered points of their own, Rochester fell just short, as CHARLES EGER missed the would-be game-tying extra point with one minute remaining. The Speed went on to seal the victory with a TD pass from QB BOB BEES to WR/DB KEVIN HARVEY with 39.7 seconds left.

Game MVP GEOFF GROSHELLE drilled two field goals, including a season long 48-yarder, and was 5-of-6 on point-after tries. Bees finished 24-of-35 for 288 yards and four TDs. Harvey (Ironman of the Game) had 12 receptions for 117 yards and two scores to lead the Speed. He also was the game's leading rusher with four carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, he tallied six solo tackles. DS RICHARD HOLLAND, the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, led the Speed with 9.0 tackles (eight solo), including one for a loss of five yards.

For Rochester, OS MARTINO THEUS (af2's leading receiver) led all wideouts with 12 receptions for 129 yards, but did not score. QB MATT D'ORAZIO was 27-of-35 for 239 yards and three touchdowns.

Albany Conquest (8-1) 64, New Haven Ninjas (3-6) 42

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany Conquest, a team known for its defense, used a spectacular offensive effort to get by the New Haven Ninjas 64-42 Saturday night in front of 5,397 fans at Pepsi Arena.

Defense and offense worked in sync for the Conquest in the first half, as Albany built a 44-7 first-half lead. New Haven outscored Albany 35-20 the rest of the way, but couldn't overcome the first-half drought.

Game MVP RYAN VENA completed 19-of-21 passes for 230 yards and a season-high seven touchdowns for the Conquest. He also ran the ball three times for 23 yards and a score. COREY HILL had a game-high 10 receptions for 120 yards and four scores. MATT VITTENGL hauled in two passes for five yards and a score and registered three tackles and two sacks on defense to earn Ironman of game honors. DAVID MAHONEY had one assisted tackle, one pass defended and 1.5 sacks to be named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.

Albany's defense rattled New Haven's two-quarterback system the whole first half. JARROD ROUANZOIN and CHRIS BODEN failed to complete a pass in the first quarter, with Rouanzoin throwing one interception. Overall, the QBs combined to go 9-of-22 for 193 yards and four scores. ANTHONY COMER led the Ninjas with four catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Augusta Stallions (8-1) 67, Jacksonville Tomcats (4-5) 37

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Augusta Stallions, behind five touchdowns from OS UNDRE WILLIAMS, ran past the Jacksonville Tomcats 67-37 Saturday night before a crowd of 4,083 people at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

Game MVP Williams led the way for Augusta, returning two kickoffs and one missed field goal for touchdowns. He also was the Stallions' top receiver of the night, hauling in eight passes for 81 yards and two more scores. QB GLEN GAUNTT was 19-of-32 passing for 203 yards and four touchdowns.

Augusta's JOHN CRATIC was named the game's Ironman, recording two tackles and a sack. ADT Defensive Player of the Game ADRIAN JONES tallied a game-high 4.5 tackles and had two passes defended.

For Jacksonville, QB RASHARD CASEY completed 14-of-29 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns. His main target was DOMINIC ROSS, who totaled 103 yards and two scores on five receptions. LAWRENCE PULLEN gained 208 yards on six kick returns, including one 50-yarder that he took back for a touchdown.

Cape Fear Wildcats (7-2) 49, Greensboro Prowlers (2-8) 39

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Cape Fear Wildcats, behind the arm of MIKE GLUSKI, won its fifth straight game Saturday night, beating the Greensboro Prowlers 49-39 before 3,084 fans at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The game was close the whole night, with the lead changing hands six times in the second half. Greensboro led by a point with five minutes remaining, but Gluski found TROY ESPRIT for a 21-yard strike to put Cape Fear up for good. MATT SIMONTON added a late 24-yard field goal to seal the win for the Wildcats.

Gluski completed 19-of-37 passes for 257 yards and five scores on his way to his eighth straight personal win of the season. One of Gluski's main targets was game MVP MATT BURNSTEIN, who had six receptions for a game-high 100 yards and two touchdowns. For Greensboro, QB CHRIS WEIBEL went 21-of-33 for 201 yards and four touchdowns. ANTOINE CALLOWAY led his squad with seven receptions for 75 yards and two scores. WALTER FORD added a 57-yard kickoff return for the Prowlers, totaling 125 yards on four returns overall.

Esprit was named the Ironman of the Game, as he had three catches for 46 yards and the game-winning score. The ADT Defensive Player of the Game award went to league sack leader E.J. BURT, who added three more to his season total. He now is 2.5 sacks shy of the af2 single-season record (20.0).

Macon Knights (8-2) 55, Columbus Wardogs (2-7) 21

MACON, Ga. - JOHN RAYBORN passed for 150 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score as the Macon Knights handled the Columbus Wardogs 55-21 Saturday night in front of 2,618 people at Macon Coliseum.

This game never was in doubt for Macon, which led 21-7 after one period, increased the lead to 34-7 by halftime and went up 41-7 in the third quarter. Rayborn completed 13-of-20 passes and was voted the game MVP. GABE AMEY led Macon with seven receptions for 78 yards. MARTEZ WESLEY (one) and TREMAINE NEAL (two) also caught touchdown passes, and NORMAN MASON tallied two catches for 14 yards and a score in his Knights' debut.

DENARIO SMALLS earned Ironman of the Game honors, tallying one rushing touchdown, 5.5 tackles, one forced fumble and recovery, one interception and two passes defended. The ADT Defensive Player of the Game was ELTON DAVIS, who had six tackles, three passes defended and an interception that he took back 25 yards for a score.

For Columbus, QB BILLY LUCKIE completed 14-of-26 passes for 124 yards and one score. He also rushed for another tally. CLIFTON ROBINSON went over 100 yards receiving for the third straight game, recording eight receptions for a game-high 118 yards. PHIL TAYLOR caught four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Bossier City Battle Wings (6-4) 56, Arkansas Twisters (5-4) 54

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - SCOTT TYNER kicked an 18-yard field goal with six seconds left to lift the Bossier City Battle Wings over the Arkansas Twisters 56-54 before 7,896 fans at ALLTEL Arena.

The game-winner culminated a nine-play, 43-yard drive that answered a go-ahead TD pass of 39 yards from Arkansas' RICKY HEBERT to ANTHONY EUBANKS with 1:45 left. The Twisters had one last chance after Tyner's field goal, but a 43-yard attempt by MARK NORRIS barely missed to the left.

The teams traded scores throughout the game except for an important 14-0 stretch for the Battle Wings that took them from a 27-20 deficit to a 34-27 lead. QB SHERARD POTEETE scored on a four-yard run with 20 seconds left in the first half and a seven-yard run on Bossier City's first drive of the second half to key the turnaround and gave the visitors their first lead of the game. In addition to five lead changes, the game was tied five times.

In addition to his two rushing scores, Poteete threw four TD passes and finished with 283 yards on 25-of-39 attempts. Hebert countered with 207 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. Arkansas' LENNIE JOHNSON had 150 yards on five kickoff returns, including a 54-yard touchdown. KEVIN SOWARD added another 61 yards on two kickoff returns and led the Arkansas receiving corps with seven catches for 73 yards and a TD. Game MVP DENNIS SHORT had eight receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns to lead Bossier City.

Arkansas' ED SQUARE won ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors with three pass breakups and a game-high 8.5 tackles. BRUCE BAILEY of the Twisters was named the Ironman of the Game with 5.5 tackles and 21 receiving yards, including a touchdown catch.

Pensacola Barracudas (4-5) 58, Tallahassee Thunder (6-3) 34

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Game MVP JACK WALKER caught just three passes, but two went for touchdowns as Pensacola topped Tallahassee 58-34 here Saturday before a crowd of 2,608 fans. Tallahassee's winning streak ended at five games.

The Thunder took an early 6-0 lead on CAINON LAMB's 15-yard touchdown catch, but Pensacola never trailed again after PATRICK DYSON's 36-yard interception return and DAVE ADAMS' conversion gave the Barracudas a 7-6 edge. Pensacola broke open a 14-14 game with a 17-0 run (a 50-yard field goal by Adams, a 36-yard touchdown catch by Walker and a 54-yard return for TD by JERRIAN JAMES on the opening kickoff of the second half). Pensacola scored three touchdowns in the third period, two by GREG HARRIS in back-to-back plays. After catching a five-yard touchdown pass from CHARLIE PETERSON, Harris recovered a fumble on the first play of the ensuing drive and returned it five yards for a score to give the Barracudas a 53-28 lead.

In addition to his kick return TD, Ironman James totaled 22 receiving yards with a TD and made two tackles. ADT Defensive Player of the Game WILL PETTIS picked off two passes. Peterson finished 13-of-32 for 175 yards and five touchdowns. Walker's three receptions totaled 91 yards. JASON CUE relieved CHRIS PERKINS at quarterback for Tallahassee, throwing for 234 yards and three touchdowns. MESIAH PORTER totaled four touchdowns for the Thunder, with three scores and 127 yards as a receiver. Tallahassee's JAMES DICKERSON caught nine passes for 114 yards.

Tennessee Valley Vipers (8-1) 60, Quad City Steamwheelers (5-4) 40

MOLINE, Ill. - The Tennessee Valley Vipers used steady quarterback play, a strong defense and mistake-free football to dominate the Quad City Steamwheelers 60-40 Saturday. The Steamwheelers had beaten the Vipers in their four previous meetings, including a 68-59 win in ArenaCup 2000. Saturday marked the Steamwheelers' third straight defeat overall and second consecutive home loss after winning their first 25 games (including playoffs) at The Mark of the Quad Cities.

Tennessee Valley led by double digits the entire second half. The turning point came in the final minute of the first half when a holding penalty nullified an IRA GOOCH touchdown catch that would have cut the Vipers' lead to 30-26 with the extra point. The Steamwheelers turned over the ball on downs and the Vipers' TODD LATOURETTE kicked a 45-yard field goal to give Tennessee Valley a 33-19 halftime edge.

Tennessee Valley put the game out of reach in the third quarter, stopping Quad City on its first two drives and scoring on an eight-yard pass from WES COUNTS to ANDY FULLER and a two-yard Counts quarterback keeper. REGGIE WORTHY later added a 17-yard touchdown catch to give Tennessee Valley a 54-25 lead entering the fourth quarter. The 29-point deficit was the largest-ever for Quad City.

Counts, the game MVP, completed 17-of-26 passes for 187 yards and seven touchdowns. He hit five different receivers and didn't throw an interception. Worthy picked up the Ironman award, catching six passes for 89 yards and four touchdowns with 2.5 tackles on defense. ADT Defensive Player of the Game KELLY SNELL had five solo tackles, three pass breakups and his ninth interception of the year. For Quad City, QB DAN McMULLEN finished 18-of-34 for 215 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. JEFF HEWITT was his top target, catching eight passes for 110 yards and two scores.

Tulsa Talons (8-1) 49, Memphis Xplorers (4-6) 35

TULSA, Okla. - ANTHONY BUICH and KEVIN NICKERSON lifted the Tulsa Talons to a team-record seventh consecutive victory, a 49-35 triumph over the Memphis Xplorers before 4,928 fans Saturday. It was also a current league-high 16th consecutive regular-season home victory for the Talons, tying Richmond for the second-best regular-season home streak in af2 history behind Quad City's 19-game run. The Xplorers have lost five in a row after a 4-1 start, the last four losses coming within the Central Division.

The Talons scored three times in the final 6:05 of the first quarter to take a 21-7 lead and never trailed after that. Buich hit OS/KR MITCH ALLNER with TD passes of nine and 30 yards, and Nickerson scored on a 30-yard interception return. But Memphis hung tough, twice cutting the deficit to five points and pulling within 35-29 on JESSE ALLEN's 11-yard TD catch with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter. But Nickerson returned to ensuing kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown, then JOE PHEARS' 10-yard touchdown run answered a last-minute Memphis score on a 16-yard pass from TIM LESTER to CARLOS McNEARY.

Buich finished 15-of-21 passing for 156 yards and four touchdowns and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Game for the third time this season. Nickerson earned Ironman honors with his two return TDs. ITIS ATKINSON led the Talons with 10.5 tackles and broke up two passes to be named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. Allner was the Talons' leading receiver, catching seven passes for 97 yards with two TDs. Memphis' JOHNNY LOPER caught 10 passes for 116 yards with one TD. Lester was 21-of-46 passing for four TDs with one interception.

Wichita Stealth (3-7) 52, Fresno Frenzy (3-7) 35

VALLEY CENTER, Kan. - Wichita made good on a "guaranteed victory" promise to its fans, defeating Fresno 52-35 Saturday in front of 2,698 people. The win avenged a May 11 loss at Fresno in which the Frenzy guaranteed a victory.

Wichita led the entire way and pulled away for good on a 21-yard pass from RON LOPEZ to WILLIE GRISSOM and an 18-yard field goal by JASON CORSE that gave the Stealth a 45-28 lead with 10:03 remaining. LAMONT WEBB tried to bring the Frenzy back with a 40-yard TD catch on a pass from KENNY ROSE, but Wichita's BRUCE HENDERSON added an insurance touchdown on a four-yard run for the final margin of victory.

By kicking away from Webb, af2's all-purpose leader, the Stealth limited him to two combined returns for 15 yards. He had 60 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. Lopez and Grissom shared game MVP honors. Grissom caught 14 passes for 147 yards and two of Lopez's four TD passes. The QB completed 29-of-47 attempts for 273 yards with one interception. Fresno QBs ROB STEPHENSON and Rose combined for 160 passing yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.

Wichita's DOUG DEGROOT, the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, had two of those INTs in addition to forcing a fumble and making a team-high 5.0 tackles. ROBERT HALL and Ironman of the Game GREG KYLER had the Stealth's other two pickoffs, with Kyler returning his interception 20 yards for a touchdown. AHMAD BHATTI had a seven-yard interception return TD for the Frenzy.

San Diego Riptide (5-5) 46, Bakersfield Blitz (6-3) 43

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - RICO CURTIS' nine-yard scoring strike from KANE CLAUNCH with 26 seconds left in the game propelled the San Diego Riptide to a 46-43 win over the Western Division-leading Bakersfield Blitz Saturday. Curtis, the game's Ironman, posted a game-high 10.0 tackles and an interception on defense. Offensively, he grabbed two receiving scores and ran in another.

Down by 14 points with nine minutes remaining, the Riptide offense responded with 20 of the game's final 23 points. A MICHAEL DUNCAN interception with nine minutes left sparked the late comeback as Game MVP MARK BUTLER (eight receptions, 138 yards, two TDs and 249 all-purpose yards) snared a 12-yard score from Claunch.

With 1:21 left, Claunch found Butler for a sliding 25-yard touchdown to close San Diego within three points at 43-40. The Riptide defense then forced a three-and-out and a missed field goal that flew out of bounds, giving the San Diego the ball at its own 20 with 35 seconds left. Claunch connected with Butler for a 21-yard gain to the Blitz nine-yard line, then found Curtis wide open for the game winner.

Claunch passed for 227 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. Bakersfield QB CHAD ELLIOTT totaled 192 yards with three touchdowns and two INTs. GERRICK BIVINS led Blitz receivers with 89 yards and two touchdowns. JULIAN YEARWOOD earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game recognition for Bakersfield with 1.5 tackles, one fumble recovery, one blocked kick and one sack for five yards.

Peoria Pirates (8-2) 64, Hawaiian Islanders (1-9) 50

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Game MVP WALTER CHURCH completed 22-of-30 passes for a Week 11-high 340 yards and seven touchdowns as the Peoria Pirates sent the Hawaiian Islanders to their ninth consecutive loss, 64-50, Saturday at Blaisdell Arena.

Hawaii mounted a pair of 14-point leads, including a 35-21 edge with 35 seconds left in the first half. But Church hit LINCOLN DUPREE with a 32-yard touchdown pass and the Pirates added a safety in the closing seconds to pull within 35-30 at halftime. Peoria then outscored the Islanders 21-3 in the third quarter to take control, with JEROME HURD scoring on a four-yard run and 24-yard catch and CORNELL CRAIG adding a 45-yard touchdown grab. The Pirates scored on all five of their second-half possessions

Craig caught five passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns for Peoria, which also got 94 receiving yards from Hurd in winning its sixth straight game. DARNELL ARCENEAUX completed 12-of-25 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns for the Islanders, with ROBERT KEMFORT's seven receptions and 91 yards leading the way. JERMAINE SHEFFIELD earned Ironman honors for catching two TD passes and recording a tackle. Dupree was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, recording 6.5 tackles and an interception.

6/16/00: Jacksonville Tomcats WR/DB TERRANCE FLAGLER returns a kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown (longest return possible in Arena Football before a rule change prior to the 2002 season allowing returners to have one foot outside the back of the end zone). Flagler is the first player in af2 history to achieve the 57-yard return. 6/11/01: af2 announces a new page on the af2 Web site will be dedicated to ArenaCup 2001. 6/15/01: Mobile, Ala., announces it will be part of af2's 2002 expansion class.
