MILWAUKEE (March 16, 2008) -- Concluding their homestand with another dominating victory, the Milwaukee Wave completed a season sweep of the New Jersey Ironmen on Sunday with a 22-6 victory at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Giuliano Oliviero completed a hat trick in the first half and later added an assist as the Wave (18-7) won their fourth straight and returned to a tie for first with the Detroit Ignition. Greg Howes had two goals and three assists to reach 102 points for the season and extend his MISL lead.
New Jersey entered the game tops in the league in penalty killing, at 68.3 percent. The Wave, however, converted 4 of 6 while killing all five Ironmen power play attempts.
"I thought we played a complete game from start to finish," said Wave head coach Keith Tozer.
Though New Jersey scored first, the Wave quickly equalized on Oliviero's first goal off a restart feed from Marcelo Fontana. Milwaukee built an 8-2 halftime lead when Oliviero completed his hat trick off a nice sequence from Deco and then Howes with 3:19 remaining in the second quarter. The Wave never led by less than six points again.
"Stats say that when you score first, you've got a better chance of winning," said Howes. "But we just went on a big-time roll once we scored and broke the ice."
The score got out of hand in the first 2:30 of the fourth quarter, when the Wave scored three goals to make it 20-6. After Marcio Leite opened the barrage with his second goal, Howes converted a great goal by stumbling in the box, then recovering in time to flip the ball over a prone Tony Meola.
Milwaukee's next goal was magnificent, with Leite holding along the right boards until Santos made an overlapping run and curled toward the penalty area. Leite found him with a pass, and Santos deked Meola to his feet before chipping the ball over him for the score.
Milwaukee never allowed the Ironmen to score more than eight points in any of the four victories, with a combined margin of 58-24.
"I was more of a fan today," Tozer said. "Everything we have been practicing for the last couple of months came out today."
Milwaukee heads to Orlando at 4 p.m. next Sunday, its first road game in more than a month. The Wave's next home game is March 30 at 2 p.m. against the Detroit Ignition, in the first of two showdowns between the league's top two teams in the final week of the season.
