Last Week's Outings:
Wave 7, Blast 13 (02/17/07) - Even a team as explosive as the Milwaukee Wave has a hard time spotting a team a six-point lead on the road. The Wave's five-game winning streak ended here Saturday night, 13-7 to the Baltimore Blast.
Milwaukee (11-9) did not even record an official shot in the first quarter and had just four in the entire half. The Wave led the MISL in scoring by a wide margin coming into the game and also led in scoring margin. Baltimore (10-9) scored the only three goals of the half, all in the second quarter.
Twice, however, Milwaukee threatened to turn the game in their favor in the second half. Goals by Todd Dusosky and Anthony Maher cut the deficit to 6-4, then after another Baltimore goal Marcio Leite buried a three-pointer with 10:14 in the game. At least two more prime chances were turned away before the Blast's Tarik Walker scored an insurance goal with 4:16 left. Lee Tschantret beat the Wave's sixth attacker formation for an empty-net 3-pointer to close out the game with 6 seconds remaining.
Wave 12, Blast 14 (02/18/07) - The Baltimore Blast converted 5 of 7 man-advantage opportunities to come back from an early 6-0 deficit and beat the Milwaukee Wave 14-12 Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Machel Millwood scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter to spark the Blast (11-9). The Wave (11-10) lost to Baltimore for the second consecutive game. Todd Dusosky had two goals and two assists to lead the Wave.
Todd lit the lamp just 47 seconds into the game Sunday. He added his second goal at the 9:35 mark off an assist from Greg Howes, and then Oral Bullen headed home a rebound offered up by Dusosky halfway through the period.
Baltimore, the MISL's defending champion, did not go away meekly, however. The Blast scored three restart goals - two on power plays - and got within 8-6. The first half ended as it began, however, with a Wave goal. Guiliano Oliviero roofed one from inside the penalty area with 28 seconds to go.
The third quarter was scoreless, but Millwood got the fourth rolling with his second goal of the night, glancing the ball in off the near post. Just 65 seconds later, Anthony Maher slid to knock home the rebound of a blast by Marcio Leite, putting the Wave back on top 12-8.
Baltimore, however, scored the game's final six points. A delayed penalty against the Wave allowed the Blast to bring on a sixth attacker, and before Milwaukee could touch the ball and trigger the penalty, Millwood connected.
The tying and winning goals came just 8 seconds apart. With 4:16 to go, Millwood scored on the power play. Just after the kickoff, Milwaukee put the ball out of play and on the restart, Tarik Walker - who scored an key late goal Saturday night - blasted one in for the lead.
Milwaukee went to the sixth attacker with 2:10 left, and the crowd of 4,910 saw a series of near misses, but couldn't force the overtime.
Brett Phillips debuted in goal for Milwaukee, playing the entire game. It was his first official action of the season after being picked up in the St. Louis Steamers dispersal draft. He had been recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.
