October 14, 2002 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release


The Milwaukee Wave improved to 3-0 during the 2002-03 season with a 23-8 victory at Kansas City on October 12. The Wave (3-0) jumped out to an 11-0 first-quarter lead and a 15-2 halftime advantage on its way to the club's 15-point victory. Nine different Milwaukee players scored a goal while 13 of the 16 Wave players who saw action registered a point. Milwaukee's win, combined with a Dallas loss to Baltimore, moved the Wave one and-a-half games ahead of the Sidekicks in the Western Conference standings.

Dallas (2-2) split its two games this past weekend, posting a 16-10 victory over Harrisburg on October 12 before dropping a 13-9 decision to Baltimore on October 13. The Sidekicks got a huge effort out of Patrick Shamu in the win over Harrisburg as the forward posted three goals, two assists, and nine points while Antonio Sutton added three goals, an assist, and seven points.

Baltimore's four-point victory at Dallas featured two Lee Tschantret goals and a three-assist performance from Paul Wright. The Blast win at Dallas followed a 10-9 loss at Cleveland on October 12. Force goalkeeper Jim Larkin made 17 saves and Hector Marinaro posted a pair of goals in that contest to give Cleveland (1-2) its first win of the season.

After splitting a pair of weekend outings, Baltimore (2-1) is currently tied with Philadelphia for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Kixx (2-1) downed Cleveland, 13-5, on October 13 in their only action of the weekend. Peter Pappas played another stellar game between the pipes for Philadelphia, allowing just two goals while Joel Shanker posted seven points to pace the Kixx offense.

Prior to the six-point loss at Dallas on October 12, Harrisburg opened the weekend with a 13-7 win at San Diego on October 11. Doug Petras made 23 saves while Marco Coria posted two goals and four points to give the Heat (1-2) the eight-point win over the Sockers (1-2).

HOWES LEADS TIGHT SPALDING SCORING RACE...

Milwaukee forward Greg Howes continues to lead the Spalding Scoring Champion race with 14 points in three games played. The third-year forward held onto the top spot on the scoring chart by posting two goals and an assist for five points in the Wave's 23-8 win at Kansas City. Howes leads Harrisburg's David Bascome by two points while enjoying a three-point cushion on Wave teammate Marcelo Fontana, Heat midfielder Marco Coria, and Dallas forwards Tatu and Patrick Shamu.

SHAMU AND PETRAS EARN WEEKLY HONORS... Offensive: Dallas Sidekicks forward Patrick Shamu has been named the MISL Offensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending October 13. Shamu receives the award after posting a 3-point goal, a pair of 2-point goals, and two assists for nine points last week.

The native of Kinshasa, Zaire produced all nine of his points in Dallas' 16-10 victory over Harrisburg on October 12. The 28-year-old forward played a part in five of the Sidekicks' seven total goals in the game, including notching the assist on Nick Stavrou's fourth-quarter game-winning score.

Shamu is currently tied for third in the MISL in both scoring with 11 points and in assists with four.

Others Receiving Consideration:

Dallas forward Antonio Sutton registered three 2-point goals, an assist, and seven points vs. Harrisburg on October 12.

Harrisburg midfielder Marco Coria posted three 2-point goals and three assists for nine points in two games last week.

Philadelphia forward Joel Shanker scored three goals and registered seven points vs. Cleveland on October 13.

Defensive:

Harrisburg goalkeeper Doug Petras has been named the MISL Defensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending October 13. Petras receives the award after leading the Heat to a 13-7 victory at San Diego on October 11.

The Robert Morris graduate stopped 23 of 26 shots faced (.885 save percentage) while allowing just three goals in the win.

Petras currently leads the MISL in save percentage at .810 while ranking fourth in points against average at 9.07.

Others Receiving Consideration: Baltimore goalkeeper Scott Hileman allowed 19 points in 119:27 of action last week.

Cleveland goalkeeper Jim Larkin stopped 33 of 43 shots faced while going 1-1 last week.

Milwaukee goalkeeper Victor Nogueira surrendered just eight points at Kansas City on October 12.

Philadelphia goalkeeper Peter Pappas allowed just two goals in Philadelphia's 13-5 win over Cleveland on October 13.

Doug Petras made 23 saves while Marco Coria scored two goals as the Harrisburg Heat defeated the San Diego Sockers, 13-7, at the San Diego Sports Arena on Friday, October 11. San Diego took an early 2-0 lead as former Heater Carlos "Chile" Farias notched the opening goal of the game, a 2-pointer, at 12:29 of the first quarter. Renato Pereira responded for Harrisburg at 13:45 of the second quarter, but Shandley Phillips re-claimed the lead for the home team with a 2-pointer at 14:07 of the second frame to give the Sockers a 4-2 halftime lead. In the third, Genoni Martinez sparked a 9-0 Heat run with a 2-point goal at the 45-second mark of the quarter before Matt Tanzini added a 3-pointer at 12:10 of the frame to give Harrisburg its first lead at 7-4. Chris Morman (4:56) and Coria (6:52) then each added 2-point fourth-quarter tallies to push the Heat lead to seven at 11-4. Following an Alejandro Cardenas 3-point score at 7:06, Coria finished the scoring with a deuce at 14:12 of the final frame to give Harrisburg its first win of the season. Coria led the Heat in scoring with a pair of 2-point goals and four points. Cardenas and Farias each had three points to pace San Diego. Petras earned the win while Nick Vorberg (11 saves) took the loss.

Hector Marinaro scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Cleveland Force defeated the Baltimore Blast, 10-9, at the Convo on Saturday, October 12. The Force opened the scoring as Kiley Couch connected on a 2-point goal at 8:49 of the first quarter to give the home team a 2-0 lead. In the second, Gino DiFlorio (7:20) and Denison Cabral (9:45) each notched 2-pointers to give Baltimore a 4-2 lead at the half. Marinaro then opened the second half scoring with a 2-point goal at the 29-second mark of the third quarter to tie the score at four before P.J. Wakefield re-claimed the lead for the Blast with a 3-pointer at 3:18 of the third. Nevio Pizzolitto answered right back at 5:31 and John Ball followed at 5:41 to give the Force an 8-7 lead. Marinaro opened the fourth quarter scoring with a 2-point goal at 8:13 and Cabral notched his second tally at 10:15, but Baltimore wouldn't get any closer as Cleveland evened its record at 1-1 with the victory. Marinaro led the Force with a pair of 2-point goals and four points while Cabral matched that effort to pace Baltimore. Jim Larkin (17 saves) earned the win while Scott Hileman (nine stops) took the loss.

Patrick Shamu posted nine points and Antonio Sutton added three goals as the Dallas Sidekicks defeated the Harrisburg Heat, 16-10, at Reunion Arena on Saturday, October 12. David Bascome gave the visitors an early 2-0 lead with his fifth 2-point goal of the season at 5:00 of the first quarter. Shamu tied the score at two with a deuce at 8:23 before Sutton scored just 20 seconds later at 8:43 of the first to give the Sidekicks a lead that they would not surrender. In the second Shamu connected on a 3-pointer at 9:55 to give Dallas a 7-2 halftime advantage before Marco Coria (1:38) and Genoni Martinez (6:03) got the Heat within one at 7-6 with 2-point third-quarter scores. Sutton answered, however, with a short-handed goal at 13:16 before Bascome tallied his second 2-pointer at 13:50 to make the score, 9-8 in favor of Dallas. In the fourth, Nick Stavrou hit a 3-point goal at 4:12 before David Barbosa scored at 5:28 of the fourth to make it a 12-10 game. Shamu (10:48) and Sutton (14:52) then concluded the scoring to give Dallas the six-point victory. Shamu led all scores with a 3-point goal, two 2-point tallies, and a pair of assists for nine points. Coria paced Harrisburg with a 2-point goal and three assists for five points. Sagu (14 saves) earned the win while Raul Salas (six stops) took the loss.

Victor Nogueira made 12 saves and Milwaukee received goals from nine different players as the Wave defeated the Kansas City Comets, 23-8, at Kemper Arena on Saturday, October 12. Milwaukee went on an 11-0 first-quarter run to put the game out of reach during the first 15 minutes of play. Michael King (1:27), Sinisa Alebic (3-pointer, 5:03), Johnny Torres (7:33), Todd Dusosky (8:39), and Marcelo Fontana (14:41) each recorded goals in the opening frame for the Wave. Greg Howes made it 13-0 with a deuce at 4:22 of the second before Nate Houser got the Comets on the board with a 2-pointer at 6:52. Howes then added another 2-point goal at 10:22 as Milwaukee held a 15-2 halftime lead. In the third, Leighton O'Brien scored at the 30-second mark to make It 17-2 before Erik Kuster notched a Kansas City deuce at 5:14. Joe Reiniger then concluded the third quarter scoring with a 2-pointer at 11:16 to make the score, 19-4. Alex Zotinca (3:49) and Houser (8:35) posted consecutive fourth-quarter 2-point goals for Kansas City, but Matt Schmidt (8:49) and Fontana (12:52) ended the scoring with Milwaukee deuces as the Wave rolled, 23-8. Fontana led all scorers with six points on a pair of 2-point goals and two assists. Houser paced Kansas City with two 2-point goals and four points. Nogueira earned the win while Brian Bowes (12 stops) took the loss.

Peter Pappas allowed just two goals and Joel Shanker posted seven points as the Philadelphia Kixx defeated the Cleveland Force, 13-5, on Sunday, October 13. Shanker opened the scoring with a 2-point goal at 2:00 of the first quarter before Cleveland's Hector Marinaro pushed the Force in front, 3-2, with a 3-point tally at 7:16. In the second, Shanker notched his second 2-pointer of the night with a deuce at the 31-second mark as the Kixx held a 4-3 halftime lead. Don D'Ambra then bagged back-to-back 2-point goals at 3:48 and 11:07 of the third quarter to give the home team an 8-3 advantage through 45 minutes of play. Shanker capped his night with a 3-point goal at 4:22 of the fourth before Les Lunsford made it a 13-3 with a deuce at 11:25. Cleveland's Steve Butcher scored the contest's final goal at 14:02 to produce the 13-5 final. Shanker led all scorers with a 3-point goal, two 2-point goals, and seven points. Marinaro paced Cleveland with a 3-point goal and three points. Peter Pappas (eight saves) earned the win while Jim Larkin (16 stops) took the loss.

Lee Tschantret scored two goals and Paul Wright added three assists as the Baltimore Blast downed the Dallas Sidekicks, 13-9, in front of a crowd of 6,491 fans at Reunion Arena on Sunday, October 13. After Brad Flanagan gave the home team a 2-0 lead with a 2-point goal at 2:33 of the first quarter, Denison Cabral notched a 3-pointer at 4:30 to put Baltimore ahead, 3-2. David Doyle answered with a 3-point strike of his own at 10:33 before Tatu notched a deuce at 14:05 to give the home team a 7-3 lead through 15 minutes of action. In the second, Tschantret (12:58) and Jason Dieter (14:52) each posted 2-point goals to make it a 7-7 game at the half. Tschantret then gave Baltimore the lead with a 2-point goal at 7:59 of the third before David Doyle tied the score at nine with a deuce at 8:43. Gino DiFlorio re-claimed the lead for Baltimore with a 2-point goal at 9:03 of the third and P.J. Wakefield added an insurance tally at 6:20 of the fourth to produce the 13-9 final score. Tschantret led Baltimore in scoring with a pair of 2-point goals and four points while David Doyle paced Dallas with a 3-point goal, a 2-point tally, and five points. Scott Hileman earned the win while making four saves. Sagu took the loss while making 10 stops.

TEAM CAPSULES (October 7 – October 13, 2002)

Baltimore Blast (2-1)

The Blast moved to 2-1 on the season with a 10-9 loss at Cleveland on October 12 and a 13-9 win at Dallas on October 13. Baltimore has four players in the top 15 in MISL scoring. Paul Wright is tied for seventh with 10 points, Denison Cabral and P.J. Wakefield are tied for 10th with nine points, and Gino DiFlorio is tied for 15th with seven points. Goalkeeper Scott Hileman is tied for second in wins with two while ranking third in both minutes played (179) and points against average (8.36). Baltimore is tied for the MISL lead in total defense, surrendering 8.3 points per game while ranking third in offense at 12.0 points per contest. The Blast is also allowing a League-low 26.0 shots per game. Baltimore begins a three-game homestand on October 19.

Cleveland Force (1-2)

The Force split a pair of games last week, beating Baltimore, 10-9, on October 12 before falling at Philadelphia, 13-5, on October 13. Hector Marinaro is tied for 10th in League scoring with nine points while goalkeeper Jim Larkin is second in the MISL in saves with 42. Larkin also ranks seventh in points against average at 12.27. Cleveland is tied for second in the MISL on the penalty kill, having killed three of five power-play opportunities for a 60% success rate. The Force is allowing the second fewest shots per game in the League at 27 shots per game. Newcomer Chris Stathopoulos recorded three assists in the win over Baltimore on October 12 and is second on the Cleveland roster in scoring with five points. The Force will host the Sockers on October 18 before traveling to San Diego on October 25 and Milwaukee on November 3.

Dallas Sidekicks (2-2)

The Sidekicks went 1-1 last week with a 16-10 win over Harrisburg on October 12 and a 13-9 loss vs. Baltimore on October 13. Patrick Shamu and Antonio Sutton both had big games vs. the Heat. Shamu recorded nine points while Sutton added seven points. Shamu is tied for third in the MISL in scoring with 11 points as is Dallas player/coach Tatu. Sutton is tied for 10th in League scoring with nine points and David Doyle is tied for 15th with seven points. Sutton and Tatu are also tied for third in the MISL in 2-point goals with four while Shamu is tied for third in assists with four. Brad Flanagan is tied for the League-lead in blocks with 10 and Jose Alvarado is third with nine blocks. Goalkeeper Sagu leads the MISL in both minutes played with 227 and in saves with 50 while ranking fifth in save percentage at .714. Dallas is currently one of only three teams averaging over 30 shots per game at 30.8 shots per contest. The Sidekicks will travel to Philadelphia on October 19 before hosting Milwaukee on October 27 and heading to Harrisburg on November 2.

Harrisburg Heat (1-2)

The Heat beat San Diego, 13-7, on October 11 before falling in Dallas, 16-10, on October 12. Midfielder Marco Coria posted nine points last week to move into a tie for third in League scoring with 11 points. David Bascome ranks second in League scoring with 12 points. Bascome leads the MISL with six 2-point goals and is tied for the MISL lead in total goals with six. Coria is tied for the MISL lead in assists with five. Goalkeeper Doug Petras made 23 saves in the win at San Diego and leads the MISL in save percentage at .810 while ranking fourth in points against average at 9.07. The Heat has been outscored 17-6 in first half action, but has outscored opponents, 27-17 in second half play. The Heat has a League-low six minutes in penalties. Harrisburg will have an off-week this week before traveling to Baltimore on October 26. The Heat will then open the home portion of its schedule by hosting Dallas on November 2 and Philadelphia on November 3.

Kansas City Comets (0-2)

The Comets dropped a 23-8 home decision to Milwaukee on October 12. Nate Houser scored two goals in the losing effort for Kansas City, which played without Dino Delevski or Nino DaSilva who were sitting out the game due to red card violations. Alex Zotinca leads the club in scoring with six points on two 2-point goals and a pair of assists. The Kansas City power play is ranked second in the MISL at 66.7%. The Comets will look to get on track on October 19 when the club welcomes the Sockers to Kemper Arena. Kansas City will then open a seven-game road swing with dates at Baltimore on October 25 and at Philadelphia on October 26.

Milwaukee Wave (3-0)

The Wave kept rolling by way of a 23-8 victory at Kansas City on October 12. Milwaukee improved to 2-0 on the road and 3-0 overall with the win. Forward Greg Howes leads the MISL in scoring with 14 points while teammate Marcelo Fontana is tied for third with 11 points. Joe Reiniger is tied for sixth with 10 points and Todd Dusosky is tied for 15th with seven points. Howes is also tied for the League lead in total goals with six and ranks second in 2-point goals with five. Dusosky is tied for the League lead in assists with five while Reiniger leads the MISL in power-play goals with four. Victor Nogueira paces the MISL in wins with three while ranking second in minutes played (180) and points against average (8.33). Nogueira also ranks third in save percentage at .774. Milwaukee's power play leads the League at a sizzling seven for 10 (70%) while the team's penalty kill is tied for second at 60%. The Wave leads the MISL in scoring at 17 points per game and is tied for the League lead in team defense, allowing 8.3 points per game. Milwaukee travels to Baltimore on October 19 before hosting Philadelphia on October 25 and heading to Dallas on October 27.

Philadelphia Kixx (2-1)

The Kixx won their second straight game by way of a 13-5 victory over Cleveland on October 13. The win moved Philadelphia to 2-0 at home on the season. Don D'Ambra paces the Kixx on offense and is tied for sixth in scoring with 10 points. D'Ambra also leads the MISL in game-winning goals with two while Pat Morris is tied for third in the MISL in assists with four. Joel Shanker, who posted seven points in the win over the Force, is 14th in League scoring with eight points. Goalkeeper Peter Pappas is tied for second in the League in wins with two and ranks fourth in minutes played with 177. Pappas also ranks fourth in save percentage at .723 while ranking fifth in points against average at 9.10. Philadelphia is second in the MISL in team scoring, averaging 12.3 points per game while the team's defense is third, allowing just 9.7 points per contest. The Kixx will host Dallas on October 19 before heading to Milwaukee on October 25. Philadelphia then returns home to host Kansas City on October 26.

San Diego (1-2)

The Sockers dropped their only contest of the week, 13-7, to Harrisburg on October 11. Despite the loss, San Diego's defense continues to display strong play. The Sockers rank fourth in the League in team defense, allowing 10 points per game. Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg leads the MISL in points against average at 7.25 while ranking second in save percentage at .796 and fourth in saves with 39. Gaston Pernia is tied for the MISL lead in blocks with 10. Carlos "Chile" Farias leads San Diego in scoring with six points while Shandley Phillips has added four points. The Sockers will travel to Cleveland on October 18 before heading to Kansas City on October 19. San Diego will return home to host the Force on October 25.
