Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The USHL Clark Cup Championship series began with a pair of close, low-scoring games at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The Hawks claimed Game One on Saturday, 2-1, with a goal and assist by Mark Naclerio, plus 37 Stephon Williams saves. Sunday Ryan McKay made 22 saves for a 2-0 Gamblers shutout. Alex Broadhurst broke a 0-0 tie for the decisive score nearly seven minutes into the third period.

Trying for Top Ten

After both contributing to the Hawks' Game One win, forward Taylor Cammarata and defenseman Mitch Witek are nearing some of the best playoff year performances in Black Hawks history. Each has a dozen points during the postseason. With one more point, either would climb among the top ten Waterloo scorers during a single playoff campaign. Forward Tom Horan set the single season Black Hawks record with eleven goals and ten assists for 21 points during the 1980 Clark Cup playoffs.

Scoring Slow Down

The Black Hawks and Gamblers entered the Clark Cup finals as the top two offensive teams during the postseason. Green Bay was first at 4.4 scores per night, while Waterloo was a close second at 4.3. After two head-to-head meetings, both clubs have fallen behind the Dubuque Fighting Saints, who found the net 19 times in five contests before being eliminated. The Gamblers lead the USHL with just 1.9 goals allowed per game; the Hawks are third at 2.2.

Extra Credit

One of the oldest and one of the youngest players on the Waterloo roster are the only skaters to appear in all 60 regular season games, plus each of twelve playoff contests. James Hansen and Taylor Cammarata have skated in 72 meaningful games for the Black Hawks with the potential to play in three more. They are two of the 14 Hawks who have been in the lineup every time the Waterloo has taken the ice in the playoffs.

All Even

For the 14th time since 1980, the Black Hawks have a 1-1 record through two games during a playoff series. Throughout the previous 13 occasions, Waterloo went on to win seven of those sets, including twice during these playoffs against the Omaha Lancers and Lincoln Stars. Six of the 13 1-1 starts have been the beginning of a series which would last for its full possible duration, including the 2008 Clark Cup Finals.
