Defensive Player of the Week

Zach Palmquist was selected as the United States Hockey League's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The South St. Paul native notched a career-best two goals Friday in Omaha, then assisted on the first two Black Hawk goals Saturday against Lincoln. Scoring is nothing new for Palmquist, who led his high school team in points last year before coming to Waterloo for the final weeks of the season. This year his ten points make him the third-leading Black Hawk scorer and tie him for second among all USHL defensemen.

Goaltender of the Week

Within 36 hours of being traded to Waterloo by the Lincoln Stars, Steve Racine appeared in two games, shutout his old team, and picked up a pair of assists. The USHL recognized his exciting weekend by naming him Goaltender of the Week. Racine's 28-save shutout Saturday was the first by a Black Hawk since Parker Milner blanked Sioux City 6-0 on March 20th, while his two assists were more than Black Hawk goalies accumulated in 2008-2009. The Hawks season record for points by a goalie is four by Dennis Jiannaras in 1982-1983.

Junior A Challenge Champions

Team USA defeated Canada West 2-1 Sunday to win the gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge in Summerside, PEI. The U.S. team was compiled almost entirely of USHL players, including Black Hawk forward Nick Sorkin, who finished the competition with one assist in five games.

Young Arena Groove

The Black Hawks are 2-2-0 in games at Young Arena, compared with a 1-5-0 record on the road. In four home games, Waterloo has outscored opponents 19-14, while on the road the opposition has had a 35-14 edge. The Black Hawks are trying for their fourth consecutive season with 20 or more home wins.
