May 16, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Lafayette Wildcatters News Release

Watch out Acadiana, your pro-indoor football team has climbed to the top of the ladder, and now sits as the number one team in the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL). The team will be boarding the bus tomorrow to travel down I-10 to visit in-state rival the Louisiana Swashbucklers. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center on Sat., May 16.

The SIFL announced May 14 that Quarterback Bo Bartik and Defensive Back Kemmie Lewis were awarded Player of the Quarter awards. League coaches and SIFL staff voted for the players based on their performances during the first four weeks of the season.

Bartik was a unanimous choice in the voting for Offensive Player of the Quarter. He has thrown 520 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Lewis is tied for the Defensive Player of the Quarter along with Austin Turfcat Kevin Earvine. Lewis has had six interceptions, has had one touchdown and has had 18.5 tackles.

Coach John Fourcade was very pleased with hearing the news. "My hat goes off to both of them," said Fourcade. "They are both very deserving. There is a reason we are 3-0, and it is because of these guys."

Leading the team offensively has been Anthony Park's 159 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Jermaine Martin is trailing behind with 95 receiving yards. Martin has racked up three touchdowns. Total offensive yards for the Mudbugs have been 520.

On the defensive side, Mitch Craft follows with 13.5 tackles. Stephen Barrett has had 11, Blake Guidry has had 10.5, and Brandon Davis has had 10. Rudy Johnson has had two sacks and Renaldo Delcambre has had a sack.

Fans should also keep their eye out for Johhny Williams, who has scored two touchdowns, Broc Menard, Antonio Logan and Stephen Barrett, who have each scored one touchdown.

A Defensive Lineman for the Swashbucklers was also named to the Player of the Quarter list by the SIFL. Winning Lineman of the Quarter, John Paul Jones has had 14 tackles and has had 2.5 sacks.

Many UL fans, and now Mudbug fans, might remember two former Ragin' Cajun players who are on the Lake Charles Team: Wide Receiver Raymond Harris and Wide Receiver Marcus Wilridge. Harris has racked up one touchdown and Wilridge has had five.

Wilridge leads his team offensively with 182 yards. Sammy Knight follows with 152 yards and three touchdowns. Total offensive yards for Louisiana has been 576.

Leading the Swashbucklers defensively is Thomas Bennett with 17.5 tackles and three sacks. Courtney Brooks has had 15.5 tackles and Brandon Thomas has had 9.

Austin's 56-53 win over Louisiana caused a big upset last week. The now 2-1 Swashbucklers were tied with the Mudbugs for first place in the league. After last weekend, Acadiana now longer shares the number one title.

The Swashbucklers have been in Lake Charles for over four years. In 2005, there were an expansion member of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) and in 2006, they joined the Intense Football League (IFL) and spent three seasons there.

Their head coach, Darnell Lee, is a former indoor football quarterback and has led Louisiana to back-to-back IFL championships.

The Swashbucklers defeated the Florida Kings 81-0 in the first week, beat the Texas Pirates 50-14 in the second week and lost to the Austin Turfcats 53-56 in the third week.

The Mudbugs beat the Austin Turfcats 37-29 in the first week, defeated the Texas Pirates 38-12 in the second week and beat the Houma Conquerors 31-23 in the third week.

The Mudbugs will face the Swashbucklers a total of three times this season: Sat., May 16, Mon., June 1 and Sat., June 6. The May 16 and June 1 games will be held in Lake Charles.
