Washington Kastles Make History With 34th Consecutive Victory

July 9, 2013 - World TeamTennis (WTT) News Release

The Washington Kastles are now officially the winningest team among U.S. major pro sports teams.

With tonight's 25-12 victory over the Boston Lobsters in Washington, DC, the Kastles extended their win streak to 34 consecutive matches, breaking the previous record they shared with the NBA's 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

The Kastles won the 2011 and 2012 Mylan World TeamTennis titles with two 16-0 seasons. The last time the Kastles lost a match was on Thursday July 22, 2010 when the Boston Lobsters defeated the Kastles, 24-15, in Overtime in the final match of the 2010 regular season. The loss propelled Boston into the 2010 playoffs and kept the Kastles out of post-season action.

On Tuesday night, Kevin Anderson got the Kastles off to a strong start with a 5-2 singles win over Boston's Amir Weintraub. The Kastles continued to roll in women's doubles, with Martina Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova posting a 5-3 win over Jill Craybas and Katalin Marosi. The Kastles built up a 15-8 halftime lead. Hingis was too much for Craybas in women's singles, winning 5-2. They closed out their historic win with Paes and Bobby Reynolds topping Weintraub and Butorac 5-2 in the final set.

BUSS CONGRATULATES KASTLES: Jeanie Buss of the Los Angeles Lakers, who was involved with World TeamTennis in the 1970s as an executive for the Los Angeles Strings, issued a congratulations statement this evening after the Kastles' win. The 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers won 33 consecutive games, a mark broken Tuesday night when the Washington Kastles posted their 34th consecutive victory.

Statement from Jeanie Buss - President, Los Angeles Lakers "Winning 33 consecutive games was an amazing accomplishment by our 1971-72 Lakers team, as evidenced by the fact that no other team has come close to reaching it for over 40 years now. On behalf of the Buss family and the Lakers family, I want to congratulate the Washington Kastles, their players, and our good friends Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss on this milestone accomplishment of theirs."
