WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A phenomenal pitching performance and fireworks at the plate carried Winston-Salem to a 6-1 victory over Wilmington, as the Warthogs swept the three-game series at Ernie Shore Field. Warthogs starting pitcher Justin Cassel (3-0) tossed eight innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out seven in a dominating performance. David Cook, Micah Schnurstein and Aaron Cunningham all hit home runs to power a Warthogs team that has won 6 of their last 7 games and remain in sole possession of first place in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.
Cook put the Warthogs in front in the first inning when he smashed his Carolina League leading fourth home run to centerfield to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead. The Blue Rocks tied the game in the third when Valentino Arce scored from third on a wild pitch by Cassel.
The Warthogs answered immediately in their half of the third when Brandon Johnson reached on a bunt single and Cunningham crushed a two-run home run to left field to give Winston-Salem a 3-1 advantage. Schnurstein blasted the Warthogs third home run of the game in the fourth inning to give Winston-Salem a 4-1.
Winston-Salem added two more runs in the eighth inning when Cook reached on a walk and moved to third base on a single by Tyler Reves. Cook crossed the plate on a wild pitch by David Humen. Cole Armstrong followed with an RBI double to score Reves and finalize the scoring at 6-1 in favor of the Warthogs. Blue Rocks start Michael Penn (1-1), who was celebrating his 25th birthday, allowed four runs, including all three home runs in 4 plus innings to take the loss.
The Warthogs have an off day on Sunday, but they will return to action on Monday, April 23 at 7 PM. Winston-Salem will welcome the Potomac Nationals to Ernie Shore Field for a four-game series starting on Monday.
