Warriors Win Streak Ends; K-Wings Sweep Home And Home
January 15, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Michigan Warriors News Release
The Michigan Warriors headed into play this weekend, winners of their past five games. They were coming off of a sweep of the Johnstown Tomahawks and the Warriors were playing arguably, their best hockey of the season. The Warriors would have their hands full this weekend however, with the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings. The K-Wings were 10-2 all-time versus the Warriors and the boys from Flint were 0-2 this season versus Kalamazoo coming into this two game battle.
The Warriors started the reigning North Division Player of the Week, Trevor Gorsuch in net for the sixth straight time on Saturday night. Gorsuch had won his previous five starts. The K-Wings went with Haninge, Sweden native, Marcus Due-Boje.
The Warriors got the scoring started in the first on a goal by Jake Faiella on the power play. Faiella let a wrist shot go from the point that alluded Due-Boje on his glove side. The power play goal from Faiella came at 11:48 and was assisted by Martin Gruse and Darren McCormick. Trevor Boyd of the K-Wings tied the game at 13:45. Jesse Juntila started a rush by chipping the puck into the Warrior zone. Mac McDonell tracked it down and passed the puck in front of the net. Trevor Boyd re-directed the puck in the net. After the first the score was tied at one. The Warriors out shot them 15-10 in the first.
The K-Wings took the lead in the second on a sharp-angled shot by Luc Boby. The former St. Louis Bandit scored his 15th goal of the season. That would prove to be the game-winner, as Marcus Due-Boje shut the door on the Warriors the rest of the way. He made 38 saves and the K-Wings ended the Warriors five game winning streak.
It was a quick turnaround for both teams as the Warriors and the K-wings faced-off at Wings West on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the result of this game was never in doubt. The K-Wings would score four times before Brock Labelle lit the lap for the Warriors. The Warriors trailed 4-1 after the second. Lucas Kohls scored his first goal as a K-Wing in the third to make it 5-1. That's how it would finish. The K-Wings out shot the Warriors, 47-36 and swept the home and home series.
The Warriors head to Johnstown to take on the Tomahawks on Friday, January 18th and Saturday, January 19th. You can hear the games live on Supertalk 1570AM and watch the action on FASTHockey.
