Warriors Give 'Em The Blues: Sweep Series in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Coming in to this weekend, the Michigan Warriors sat seven points behind the Springfield Jr. Blues, who held the sixth and final playoff spot in the North Division. The Warriors had won the previous two games at the Nelson Center and were looking for the season sweep in the Jr. Blues home building. Trevor Gorsuch continued to carried the workload in goal for the Warriors. He was opposed Friday night by Matt Leon. Davis DeKorte, formally of Kalamazoo, was making his Jr. Blues debut after he was dealt to Springfield in exchange for Captain Mike Fazio.

The Warriors got the scoring started in the final minute of the first. Marty Gruse won a draw back to Mitch Wedding who through a wrist shot toward the goal. Brad Pizzey redirected it home for his fourth goal of the season. The Warriors lead 1-0 after the first. They outshot Springfield, 15-13.

Sprinfield tied the game in the first minute of the second, but Jake Hopfner gave the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish at 10:29. Colin Larkin added a power play at 16:32. The Warriors enjoyed a 3-1 after two periods.

The Blues would cut the lead to one once more on a power play by Jeff McFarlane. Zack Szajner would add an insurence marker at 13:01 and the Warriors held on to a 4-2 win on Friday night. Trevor Gorsuch made 49 saves and was somehow, only the third star of the game.

The Warriors looked to tighten the Jr. Blues lead on the sixth and final playoff spot Saturday night. Trevor Gorsuch made his league high, 13th straight start in the Warriors cage. On this night, he was opposed by Springfield backup, Ryan Kellenberger.

The Warriors got another goal in the final minute of the first, when Josh Shellman fired a slap shot from the point that hit two Jr. Blues players on the way through and beat Kellenberger. The period also provided some fistic activity between Warriors Defenseman Rob Click and Blues forward Dallas Crum. Shellman's first as a Warrior made it 1-0 at the first intermission.

The Warriors would two goals in second. Jon Farkas and Zack Szajner gave the Warriors a three goal lead going into the third.

The three goal lead would be plenty for Trevor Gorsuch, who picked up his second shutout of the year and his 11th win. Gorsuch made 32 saves in the Warriors 3-0 win. The win brought them within three points of the playoffs and gave them their eight win in their past twelve games. The Warriors will host Kalamazoo and Port Huron this weekend at Perani Arena.
