Warner Named Central's Top Player

DURHAM, N.C. – Lincoln outfielder Bryan Warner was named the Daktronics Northern League Central Player of the Year on Tuesday by Central managers and media representatives.

Warner, 28, has played in all 90 games for manager Les Lancaster with a one-game regular-season playoff left tonight to decide the Northern League Central-South champion. He has a .331 batting average, 56 runs, 119 hits (one away from second place in the Central), 20 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 15 stolen bases, 26 walks, 37 strikeouts and a league-high 78 runs batted in.

Originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 14th round of the 1994 June Draft, Warner started his professional career in Burlington (N.C.). He was released after the 1996 season out of Single-A Columbus (Ga.). He signed with the independent Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the Texas-Louisiana League in 1997, played for the Colorado Rockies' Single-A team in Salem (Ore.) in 1998 and spent his first season in the Northern League for Duluth-Superior in 1999.

Warner hit .340 for the Dukes and had his contract purchased by the Chicago Cubs that off-season. He hit .273 with 10 homers in Single-A Lansing (Mich.) in 2000 but was released during spring training in 2001. The Saltdogs signed him for their inaugural season in 2001 and he hit .324 with six homers and 37 runs batted in.

A resident of Monrovia, Calif., Warner attended Glendale Community College in his home state. He is a left-handed hitter and stands 5-foot-9.
