Wambach Lauded by WUSA

July 21, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, July 21, 2003) - Washington's Abby Wambach has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending July 20, 2003. Wambach scored both Freedom goals in a 2-0 win over New York on Saturday, July 19 at RFK Stadium. The event marked her third multiple-goal game this season, the most of any WUSA player thus far.

In Saturday's victory over New York, Wambach's first goal of the match was scored in the sixth minute. The 5-foot-10 forward collected a loose ball in the penalty area (a result of midfielder Steffi Jones' deflected shot) and blasted it past Power goalkeeper Saskia Webber to put the Freedom up 1-0. Wambach struck again in the 80th minute, connecting on a Mia Hamm corner kick, via a diving header, to bury the ball into the far right corner of the net for her second goal of the match and a 2-0 Freedom victory. Wambach also recorded a commendable performance in the Freedom's 2-1 loss to San Diego on Wednesday, July 16, playing the full 90 minutes and a key offensive role in the game.

The 2002 WUSA Rookie of the Year, Wambach is no stranger to electric performances. She is one of only four WUSA players to score a hat trick this season, leads the WUSA in points scored per game (1.69) and is tied for first in the league in game-winning goals (3). This marks the second time Wambach has earned MET-Rx Player of the Week in 2003, having also been voted the honor for week six.

Wambach's 31 points (9 first place, 13 second place) narrowly defeated Boston's Karina LeBlanc's 29 points (11 first place, 7 second place). Other votes went to Atlanta's Briana Scurry and Sharolta Nonen, San Jose's Katie Barnes and Katia, and Carolina's Kristen Luckenbill. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
