Wallis, Oelke Earn Central League Honors

San Angelo catcher Jacob Wallis and Springfield/Ozark right-hander Steven Oelke were named the Daktronics Central League Players of the Week on Monday for the period ending June 8.

Wallis, 23, has hit safely in 20-of-24 games since starting the year 0-for-11 in the first four contests. He went 12-for-25 (.480) during the week with a .880 slugging percentage, .517 on-base percentage, seven doubles, one homer and eight RBIs. A former Cincinnati and Montreal farmhand, Wallis is having a career year. A lifetime .194 professional hitter coming into 2002, he played in Rio Grande Valley in 2000 and spent the 2002 season in Chillicothe of the Frontier League.

Oelke, 23, is in his second season with the Mountain Ducks out of Christian Brothers University in Tennessee. He went 2-2 with a 4.84 earned run average in 35 1-3 innings for the Ducks last season. He allowed two runs in 15 innings last week for a 1.20 ERA, six walks and 16 strikeouts. He threw a five-hit complete game shutout versus Jackson on June 2 and allowed four hits and two runs at Coastal Bend in a six-inning no-decision on June 8.
