Walks and Errors Hand Jackals Second Straight Loss

August 1, 2020 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

The Jackals lost their second game in a row as they fell to the New York Brave 10-5. Control seemed to be an issue early on the mound for New Jersey as Oliver Rijo and Dario Polanco combined for six walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first inning, surrendering five runs in the process. The bats came alive for the Brave in the third inning when Eddie Nevins knocked in three runs on a base-clearing double. Nevins would later score on a sac-fly by Brandt Broussard.

New Jersey committed a season-high four errors tonight, including two in the third inning that lead to Nevin's RBI double. Entering tonight's game, the Jackals had only three errors all season and had not committed more than one in any single game.

The Jackals began to crawl back in the seventh inning with an RBI double by Ethan Lopez and an RBI walk by Trey Martin. However, with the Jackals down four and the tying run at the plate, reliever Matt Valin struck out Cos Cannella to get out of the inning. The Brave took the momentum into the eighth inning, and Peter Peña gave New York some more breathing room with a one-out RBI double.

Brave starter Chris Cepeda went six innings, giving up five runs and striking out five. John Saviano closed things out in the eighth inning with no runs on no hits to give the Brave their second win of the season.

JC Peña led the Jackals offensively, going three for four with two singles and a triple. Peña picked up one RBI and scored twice.

The Jackals move to 3-2 on the season, while the Brave improve to 2-3. The Jackals will look to stay above .500 as they head up to the Palisades Credit Union Park tomorrow, August 1, to face the New York Brave once again.
