New Orleans VooDoo News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. (May 11, 2012) - The Spokane Shock (4-4) were the first to score in overtime defeating the New Orleans VooDoo (3-5), 68-62, on Friday night in the Spokane Arena.
The VooDoo won the coin toss in overtime, but on the second play in the extra period, quarterback Kurt Rocco threw an interception to Shock defensive back Terrance Sanders that he returned to the 1 yard line. One play later, Shock quarterback Kyle Rowley sealed the win with a carry up the middle for the game-winning touchdown.
Rocco finished the game with a career-high 402 passing yards and tied a career best 8 touchdown passes. Rowley tapped out with 271 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.
"It is unfortunate how it turned out," said VooDoo Head Coach Pat O'Hara. "I think the game really came down to special teams play. We have to regroup, and get ready for Orlando on Friday night."
Sanders' interception in overtime wasn't his only mark on the game as he had two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Sanders finished with 5 kickoff returns for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also leading the Shock defense with 8.5 total tackles, 2 interceptions and 2 pass break ups. The VooDoo were led by Jeremy Kellem on defense with 10.0 total tackles, 0.5 tackles for a loss, 2 pass break ups and an interception.
The VooDoo and Shock traded scores throughout the first half and went into the locker room tied 28-28 at halftime. In the second half, the trend continued until early in the fourth quarter when New Orleans recovered a Rowley fumbled snap and scored three plays to take a 54-49 lead on a Josh Bush touchdown reception. Bush finished with 146 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Quorey Payne had 147 yards and 1 touchdown.
The Shock had a chance to win with 2 seconds left, but failed on the extra point attempt to leave the game knotted at 62.
The VooDoo will return to The Graveyard next Friday, May 18 as they host the Orlando Predators. The game will be the NET10 NFL Network Game of the Week.
