VooDoo Assigned 2013 AFL Rookie of the Year
NEW ORLEANS (September 9, 2013) - The New Orleans VooDoo have been assigned four players in the Offseason Assignment Process, including 2013 AFL Rookie of the Year WR Mario Urrutia, Veteran LB Tyus Jackson, DB Camerron Cheatham and Veteran DL/LB Mike Alston announced the VooDoo front office Monday, September 9, 2013.
Former member of the Utah Blaze, "Super" Mario Urrutia (6-5, 230, Louisville) was named the 2013 NET10 Wireless Rookie of the Year after he enjoyed a sensational start to his AFL career, opening the 2013 season with eight consecutive multi-touchdown performances. He surpassed the 100-yard mark in eight games and led all rookie receivers in every statistical receiving category.
While playing in 17 games this past season, Urrutia amassed 1,675 yards with 38 touchdowns on 142 receptions. He finished seventh in the AFL in scoring (13.9) and successfully converted eight two-point attempts - more than any other team combined. Urrutia concluded his inaugural campaign placing fifth amongst all AFL players in receptions and receiving yards, as well as sixth in receiving touchdowns.
Previously with the Chicago Rush, Veteran linebacker Jackson (6-3, 265, Memphis) collected 17 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 17 starts while with the Rush in 2013. In 2012, Jackson recorded 26 tackles and two sacks splitting time between the Kansas City Command and Milwaukee Mustangs. Jackson collected 28 tackles and 8.5 sacks while with the Kansas City Command in 2011 and 24 tackles and 8.5 sacks as a rookie with the Milwaukee Iron in 2010.
Cheatham (5-10, 195, Cincinnati) formerly with the Chicago Rush, collected 3.5 tackles in one start with the Rush. During his collegiate career, Cheatham appeared in 51 games for the Bearcats and notched 143 tackles, collected seven pass break ups and made seven interceptions.
Veteran contributor from the Utah Blaze, Alston (6-2, 250, Toledo) recorded 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 16 games with the Blaze in 2013. While with the Shock in 2012, Alston recorded nine tackles and four sacks in six games. He tallied a career-high 20.5 tackles with three sacks and an interception as a rookie with the Chicago Rush.
On Monday, New Orleans has also announced that the team has exercised one-year rookie options on QB Chris Dixon, OL Bryce Tennison, FB Bruce Figgins, WR Antonio Robinson and New Orleans natives DB Delvin Breaux, K Danny Hrapmann.
