Volcanoes Back to Winning Ways

Vancouver Volcanoes News Release

Vancouver, WA - After three losses in a row the Volcanoes were looking for a win and got it at home with a narrow margin in a tough fourth quarter versus the Seattle Flight.

"It was all about our defense", the lead on the bench shared. "We played about the best eight minutes we have as a team at the end of the second quarter and got the lead up to about 16, I was really complimentary to the guys at halftime about our defensive effort. Then in the fourth quarter the Flight decided to stop missing three pointers, making about eight or nine in a row. They were guarded three pointers, we weren't executing poorly on defense, they were just making shots. When teams make shots like that it is hard to beat them but our guys hung through and I am really proud of them," Head Coach Navarro said proudly about his team getting back to their winning ways.

It was a tie game at many points in the fourth, 11 times overall in the game, with 13 lead changes. The Volcanoes found themselves in a 124 all game with 50.3 seconds on the clock. A bucket by Vancouver, another three by Seattle, but a foul in the next play sends 6'3" G Josh Tarver to the line for some key free throws hitting both, the Flight go for a three again no good and the home team comes up with the win 131-128 lead by their All Star Murray.

"Andre is really hard to guard, he is really good with the ball and he did a great job defensively as well. In our sets he gets a lot off on ball screens, but he's also out in space, we put him away from the ball a lot so defense has to rotate on to him. He's so good east to west with his dribble, and when he finishes the way he does he scores at will. I wouldn't want to play against us because we can really score the ball, and Murray is just one of our ways." Navarro says about his star player.

6'2" G Andre Murray had another outstanding performance with 30 points and 13 assists, adding 7 rebounds. "We got the last 3 (points), coming back home we always get that home cooking, and we came out on top," Murray shared. "Their feisty team, which I think always brings out the best in our players, especially me, so I am happy about the win tonight," the number one player in the league said.

"At the end Dre (Andre Murray) got me the ball, and they fouled, a situation we have been through a million times. You just have to be calm and knock 'em down and that's what we did," former Beaver Josh Tarver shared, adding a total of 14 points and 13 assists to get the win. "Josh is our quarterback," his Head Coach shared, "when he's out there as our point guard our offense flows a lot better and our defense is a lot better too, because he is so good defensively."

Action for the team continues on the road Sunday where the Battle of the Bridge moves to Portland, 5pm tip off at East Moreland Courts. "The Chinooks are our rival, we like playing against those guys and we will have a full roster against them tomorrow. We will enjoy this one tonight and worry about them tomorrow," Navarro closed with on the Volcanoes first win in four games.
