TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced the retirement of 1st basemen Brad Vericker.
Vericker signed with the San Francisco Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Point Loma College and played three years in their farm system, reaching as far as double-A before being released following the 2005 season. Vericker was signed by the Gary Railcats of the Northern League and traded to the Beach Bums early in the 2006 season for outfielder Kevin White. Vericker made an immediate impact on the Beach Bums, hitting .294, with 13 doubles, 9 home runs, and 44 RBI in 64 games in 2006 and .266, with 17 doubles, 7 home runs, and 48 RBI in 88 games in 2007.
"Brad was and will always be a huge part of the Beach Bums family," said Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "He was one of our more popular players and one of the more feared hitters in the Frontier League. Will will miss him in Traverse City; it will be hard to replace his leadership on and off the field."
The Traverse City Beach Bums also announced the trading of outfielder Aaron Garza to the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association for future considerations.
"Garza had a very memorable rookie season in Traverse City, but he expressed to us this off-season that due to financial reasons that he would need to play someplace closer to home," said Jason Wuerfel, the Beach Bums Director of Baseball Operations. "He is going to get a good opportunity to play for an expansion team in a brand new stadium, a great league, and for a very good manager. We wish him the best of luck."
The Grand Prairie AirHogs are managed by former Major League player Pete Incaviglia, who enters his first season as a professional manager after coaching for several seasons in the Detroit Tigers farm system.
