Amarillo, TX 2/2/11 - The Amarillo Venom announce their Defensive Coordinator for the upcoming season.
Sammy Walker, a former Texas Tech cornerback, will be the Defensive Coordinator for the Amarillo Venom. Walker is from McKinney, Texas and has an extensive background of football. Walker was a candidate for the "Jim Throrpe Award" which is given for the best defensive back in the country. After graduating from Texas Tech, Walker was a fourth round (84th overall) draft pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1990. He started all 16 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1991 and played extensively for an injured Rod Woodson during the playoffs. He was then signed with the Green Bay Packers as a free agent in 1992 and went on to play in eight games including a wildcard victory against the Detroit Lions. Unfortunately, his NFL career was cut short due to injuries.
When asked, which team he would be pulling for in the Super Bowl, Walker replied, "I think I will have to go with the Pittsburgh Steelers since they drafted me." He went on to say that he is excited to see both teams he played for in the Super Bowl though.
Walker is also excited to be part of the Amarillo Venom organization and to be coaching alongside fellow Texas Tech alumni Rodney Blackshear.
"Coach Walker brings a lot to the table; he can help our guys in some many ways. He knows exactly what it takes to get to the NFL and he knows the type of players NFL teams are looking for" commented Venom General Manager Joe Morgado.
