Utah Royals FC Duo of Diana Matheson and Desiree Scott Called to Preliminary World Cup Camp

SANDY, Utah - Utah Royals FC duo of MFs Desiree Scott and Diana Matheson have been called to the Canadian Women's National Team for the team's preliminary camp ahead of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Canada's final World Cup roster is expected to be released later this month.

Matheson and Scott will participate in the Canadian camp where the team will face Mexico on May 18 in its official send-off match prior to its World Cup training camp held in Spain. Canada will face Cameroon, New Zealand and the Netherlands in Group E of this year's tournament. The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup will commence on June 7 with the final being played on July 7. Both players are expected to return prior to the end of the 2019 NWSL regular season.

"Congratulations to Diana and Desi. It's an incredible honor for them to represent Canada and this is well deserved," Utah Royals FC General Manager Stephanie Lee said.

Matheson receives the call-up carrying with her 203 appearances for the Canadian side having scored 18 goals. Her most notable moment for her country came at the 2012 Summer Olympics when she notched a 92nd minute winner against France to secure a bronze medal for Canada at the games. She also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games with the senior national team.

Scott joins the preliminary camp roster having appeared in 141 matches for the senior team as well as appearances for the U-16 and U-19 squads. Although she has never scored for Canada, Scott remains a fixture in the midfield for her national team.

Thus far in 2019, Scott has played every minute of the National Women's Soccer League season for Utah Royals FC, totaling 360 minutes to help the team to the top spot in the league after just two matches played.
